Fuselage Assembly
1.
Inspect the fuselage and upper pylon for any burrs or sharp edges and deburr these before prepping and painting your parts.
MDl04
2.The raw frame of the TWlNSTARR needs to be protected by a coating of some kind. We offer
powder coating as an option which gives you an extremely durable and evenly coated airframe. If
your TWlNSTARR has been powder coated skip to step 6.
3.Using your desired system of prepping, priming and painting, finish the airframe and all partsthat need finishing. A list of the items that need a finish coating follows. You may want to paint all the aluminum pieces also. This would help improve corrosion resistance.

4.Attach the upper pylon to the lower airframe using the AN4 bolts, make sure that the bolt heads
are on the outside and there are between 1 1/2 to 3 threads showing through the nut on the inside of the airframe. Use washers to adjust any variances.

Main Gear Legs
Socket Installation
1. Fit the Main Gear Leg Socket into the airframe. The gear leg socket holes provide a choice of three positions for the wheels, forward, center and aft. The position difference is about 4 inches each way. The aft position has become the preferred one for most builders as it
makes the nose easier to push down for entry into the cockpit. This position does make rotational forces slightly heavier. Make your decision carefully because a change in socket position later will change the toe-in toe-out of the wheels. That case might require a repositioning of the axle assembly for alignment.
2. Install the hardware called out making sure to place bolt heads on the inboard side.

MainGear Legs
IMPORTANT: alignment of the gear legs will have a significant affect on the ground track, so get it right.
1.The gear legs are heat treated to give exceptional springiness for those not so soft landings, and can stand
plenty of abuse. During the heat treating process the gear may bow ever so slightly. Lay the gear legs on a smooth surface and roll them back and forth. If the gear leg has a bow in it, place a piece of tape on the high side of the bow and make sure this is up when drilling the bolt holes for the gear retaining bolts.
2.Drill a 3/1 6' dia. hole horizontally through the Main Gear Socket 4' up from each end. (This bole is
pre-drilled in some kits)
---
---
3.Install the gear legs up into the sockets so that 26- 1/2" of each leg remains outside the main gear socket.
Drill 3/16 dia. bole into the Gear Legs and position with a AN bolt. Then drill the opposite side of the Gear Legs.
4.Clean up the holes with a ]5/64 bit and ream to .248 dia.. This will provide a snug fit for the 1/4" bolts.
NOTE: The bolts must be installed with the heads facing aft so the gear legs can be removed with the Fuel Tank installed.
5.Before the axle assemblies can be fustalled you must assemble the wheels ,tires, and tubes. Or, assemble
the wheels as shown in the instructions in the wheel kit.(See Sect. 7 Page 1)
Rev. 6/3/97 02100mgSect. 6 page 4
Farringon Aircraft Corp. TWINSTARR assembly manual
6.Drill 3/16" dia. horizontal pilot hole in the installed gear leg 2" up from the bottom. (See MD294)
NOTE: The methods described in items seven and eight are both equally effective. Use whichever one applies to your ship. Step # 7 can only be used if the center bole position is selected.
(See Sect. 6 Page 3)
7. The axles are hollow all the way through. Using a straight tube that fits snugly into the axle shaft. insert the tube into the axle and slide it up to the center line of the opposite gear leg. This will put the axles in line with the airframe. Drill through the pilot holes in the gear leg with a 15164" dia. bit and ream to .248"dia.. Install the bolts in the axle assembly. Install the wheels and brakes. Inflate the tires to the proper pressure.

8.Install the axle sockets and wheels into the ends of your finished gear legs. Make sure they are both
inserted the same distance into the gear leg. With the wheels on, clamp an eight foot straight edge
to each wheel brake disk . Measure between each end until your wheels are parallel with the centerline of the ship. Pilot drill through the axle stub with a 3/16" dia. bit. When you are sure that the wheels track correctly, drill out holes 15/64 dia. and ream to .248 dia. . Drill these with the same accuracy as the gear legs where drilled. (See MD149)
