Position: Senior Instrument Technician

Experience:

  • Siemens S5 (115U/150) PLC fault finding and modifications program design and implementation.
  • Boiler Control system optimisation (consisting predominantly of Teleperm C), fault finding and monitoring.

Responsibilities:

  • Efficient and optimum Auto Control of the Power Station Boilers and Boiler Auxiliaries.
  • Work in close liaison with Production Managers, Performance and Monitoring and Engineering to present conclusions from tests and analysis of Plant faults.
  • Attend ESKOM Optimization Forums; Optimization methods and unresolved problems are presented by all Stations. The Forum is chaired by a Senior Engineer from Head office and attended by Engineers and Optimization Specialists from the relevant Power Stations.

Position: Instrument Technician

Experience:

  • Siemens S5150 PLC maintenance, fault finding and modification implementation.
  • Siemens Teleperm C and Iskamatic B maintenance, fault finding and modification implementation
  • Field instrumentation maintenance and calibration such as PH, conductivity, chlorine and turbidity analysers. Flow, pressure and level transmitters which include ultrasonic, radar and magnetic primary measuring principles.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant Control and Instrumentation.
  • Required being on standby for C&I related emergency breakdowns on the Station, after hours, one week per two months.

Position 2:

Position: Instrument Mechanician

Period: 27/12/1985 to 30/06/1987 (2 year)

Company: ESKOM Tutuka Power Station (Coal and Ash Disposal Plant)

Experience:

  • Calibration and Maintenance, on Coal Silos and Ash Bunkers field Instrumentation. Which included Nuclear level switches, Capacitance Level Transmitters, and strain-Gauge Level Transmitters.
  • Calibration and Maintenance on Condensate Polishing Plant, Low Pressure Diesel/Electrical Compressors, Cooling Water Plant, and Ash disposal Plant field Instrumentation. Which included RTD Temperature Transducers, Bearing Vibration Transducers, Proxcimitry switches, Analyzers and Control Valves.
  • Program, Debugging and Hardware Faultfinding using the applicable Programming Units on S5-Siemens, AEG and Modicon PLCs.
  • Step 5 150 PLC maintenance and fault finding
  • Maintenance of Texas Instrument PLC at Majuba Power Station temporary Potable Water Treatment plant (No C & I Personnel were yet established).

Responsibilities:

  • Calibration, Maintenance and routine inspections on Coal/Ash conveyor field Instrumentation. Which included Misalignment Switches, Belt-Rip Switches, Speed Switches, Block Shut Switches and belt Tension Controllers.

Position 1:

The four-year apprenticeship served was fairly equally divided in stages of college semesters, internal ESKOM courses and on-job training. I finally completed the relevant Trade test preparation courses and qualified as an Instrument Mechanician on 27/12/1985 after I passed the said trade test at Olifantsfontein (Department of Manpower Trade Test Central Organization).

  • Maintenance and calibration of Kent field instrumentation at the Water Treatment Plant namely: DP flow Transmitters, Pressure Transmitters, Flow Integrators, Flow Switches, paper Recorders and Sodium, Oxygen, pH Analysers.
  • Fault finding on Relay Logic Interlock Pump Stations.
  • Testing and maintenance on RTD temperature Measurement.
  • Stroking of Pneumatic and electrical Actuators and Control Valves. Calibration of Pneumatic Positioners.
  • Specialised in maintaining and fault finding on a CMOS Conlog system used for sequential step control of De-mineralised water production and Resin cleaning.
