Primary ICT: Whiteboard Lesson Starts - Beliefs and Values

Stealing (Yr 3/4) Is it ever ok to steal?

  • Before showing the lesson starter and with no other initial input, ask the children to “vote with their feet” (i.e. move to different, labelled points –yes/no - around the room depending on what their response is) to answer the question “Is it ever ok to steal?” Record numbers of yes/no responses. Ask the children to write their own response on a piece of paper and to add their reasons for their chosen response. Fold this and put it to one side.
  • Show the lesson starter “Stealing” on the IWB.
  • Ask the children “Why did the homeless man steal the apple? Do you think that he is living like this by choice? Why do you think he might be in this position? Was what he did ok in your opinion? What might make it ok/not ok?”
  • Put the following statements into a “Diamond 9”, with the statement that you agree with most at the top and the one you disagree most strongly with at the bottom.

If I can’t afford something but I really need it, then it is ok for me to steal it. / Stealing only happens because some people have too much and others don’t have enough. So stealing is ok because it evens things out. / Nobody should ever steal anything from anyone else.
If I can’t afford something but I really want it, then it’s ok for me to steal it. / All religions say that stealing is wrong, so you should never steal. / If I don’t like someone or if they have done something to hurt me or my family then it is ok to steal from them to get back at them.
It’s never ok to steal even if you are starving. The only fair way is to pay or to go without. / If I have tried every other way and no-one will share or give me a job so that I can earn money, then I have no other choice. I have to steal to stay alive and it is ok. / If I steal something and it doesn’t really hurt anyone else, then it’s ok.
  • Each child to arrange their own “Diamond 9” then compare with a partner, explaining their choices. Do they want to change any around once they have discussed with a partner?
  • Did the homeless man in the scenario have any other options? What might they be? Would they be better? Why? How many alternative ways of behaving for the man can your class think of? Sit in a circle and go around allowing the children to make alternative suggestions.
  • You have to help write a new law about stealing for your country. Choose one of the following outlines and fill in the gaps.

Law Number 1

Stealing is not allowed in our country, except in the following circumstances:

1.

2.

3.

4.

Citizens of our country are encouraged to share what they have with others so that no-one is in great need.

Law Number 2

Under no circumstances is stealing allowed in our country. These are the reasons why we will punish anyone caught stealing, whatever the circumstances.

1.

2.

3.

4.

  • Class to “vote with their feet” again and compare with their previous responses. Has anyone changed their mind? What are the reasons for any changes.
