Use of Movies for Instructional Purposes

GUIDELINES

Teachers are expected to use their best professional judgment when selecting a movie or video for instructional use in the classroom. The primary consideration prior to showing a film or video in an educational setting is “What is the purpose for showing this film?” The additional guidelines shown below should be considered prior to including a movie clip in a lesson plan.

·  Videos should be used only for instructional purposes that are directly related to the curriculum.

·  A video clip used during instructional should be directly related to specific learning outcomes and followed up with specific instructional activities and assignments.

·  Videos may not be used to entertain, to fill time in the classroom, or as an emergency lesson plan when a substitute is in the classroom.

·  Commercial videos rated G, PG or PG-13 may be used as part of face-to-face instruction. No R-rated movie may be shown in its entirety. Appropriate excerpts that do not qualify the movie for its R rating may be shown only with an assistant principal’s approval.

·  When showing a PG-13 or R-rated movie clip, the teacher should obtain permission from each student’s parent used the form shown below.

·  The movie or video clip must be lawfully obtained and shown within the guidelines of applicable copyright law. Videos rented from businesses and marked “for home use only” cannot be viewed in the classroom.

·  Safari Montage should be considered as the first source for appropriate video material.
