Procedure/Arrangements
Regular fire drills will be carried out once a term and random checks made of call points every week. When the fire alarm is raised, staff to escort children, students and visitors out of the building to the designated area on the junior playarea. A roll call will be taken and fire wardens will make a sweep of the school to ensure everyone is out. A policy is attached for the safe removal of any disabled children.
If a fire is detected, raise the alarm, and if possible, use the appropriate fire extinguisher to attempt to put the fire out. Please make the office aware so that the necessary emergency calls can be made. A list of the uses for the various extinguishers is attached.
In the event of a fire occurring during the lunch period, lunch time controllers will be responsible for escorting children to the assembly point from their designated areas – Hall, playground and designated toilets for use at lunchtime.
The following rules must be observed in the interest of safety:
- All access routes for emergency vehicles should be left clear
- No mis-use of fire extinguishers
- All fire exits should be left clear
- Ensure all visitors and students are made aware of evacuation routes and procedures
- Hazardous and flammable chemicals should be under lock and key
- Boiler should be kept clear of clutter
- Prompt attention should be taken with fire drills
- Due diligence and precautions to be taken when using fire in an activity and risk assessments to be carried out for all such activities.
- Notify the Competent Fire Person, Fire Wardens or H&S Governor of any potential problems
- Study the attached EMERGENCY PLAN.

EMERGENCY PLAN
How People will be warned if there is a fire……..
- By breaking the glass in the nearest call point. Call points are displayed on the site map. This will then sound the fire alarm.
- The alarms in both buildings are linked and will therefore sound in both buildings when activated
The action to be taken if someone discovers a fire…….
- If the fire is small enough to put out, use the nearest extinguisher for the type of fire i.e. electrical, fat, wood etc. If not break glass in the nearest call point and evacuate children, students and visitors according to fire drill. Alert the office who will call the fire brigade.
How the evacuation of the premises should be carried out…….
- The evacuation of the premises should be as your normal fire drill. The nearest escape route away from the source of the fire should be used. Do not take belongings with you, this wastes time. Gather up any students or visitors in your locality and care should be taken with the evacuation of the disabled. They will need assistance. All should go quickly and quietly to avoid panic and assemble on the designated area where a roll call will be taken.
Where people should assemble after they have left the premises and procedures for checking whether the premises have been evacuated……
- The assembly point for the whole school is on the junior playarea between both buildings. Each class is assigned a number to assemble at, see attached.
Identification of escape routes, how people can gain access to them and escape from them to a place of safety…….
- All classrooms with the exception of the rollalongs, Infant Library, Lime and Silver Birch classroom have second exit doors to the outside. These rooms should leave the building by the next nearest available fire exit. The windows in all of the rollalong buildings can be used if the exit is blocked by fire. The offices will leave by the front entrance.
Arrangements for fighting a fire……
- Fire extinguishers are placed throughout the school and a list is attached to this document explaining the correct uses.
The duties of people who have specific responsibilities in the event of fire and how they are identified…….
- Fire wardens comprise of the competent fire person, headteacher and admin staff. It is their duty to carry out a thorough sweep of the buildings and report back to the assembly point that all is clear.
- Admin staff will take the school registers, staff signing in book, visitor’s book and contractor’s log with them to the assembly point.
- Teachers will retrieve their registers from the admin staff and check to see everyone is present.
- Lunchtime Controllers will escort children to the assembly point if a fire breaks out during lunch period.
- Afterschool Club staff will sweep the building if the alarm is activated during Afterschool club.
Arrangements for the safe evacuation of people identified as being especially at risk, such as contractors, those with disabilities, members of the public and visitors…….
- As the infant building is on one level, there are many exits which would be suitable for the disabled. Any disabled visitors to the junior building should evacuate the building through the main entrance. It will be the class teacher’s responsibility that they appoint someone to assist any disabled child or person. Likewise, any members of the public, visitors or students would be subject to instruction from the nearest teacher. Fire wardens would alert any contractors on site.
Machines/processes/power supplies that need to be stopped or isolated in the event of fire……
- The main isolation switches are situated in the kitchen and if time permits, the kitchen staff should switch off and isolate all supplies.
Specific arrangements, if necessary, for high fire risk areas……
- The only high risk areas would be the kitchen area and boiler room. Fire blankets and fire fighting equipment are available in the kitchen.
How the emergency services will be called and who will be responsible for doing this……
- This is the duty of the school office to alert the emergency services and the headteacher will nominate someone to meet the services.
Procedures for meeting the fire and rescue service on arrival and notifying them of any special risks, eg. the location of highly flammable materials……
- The rescue services should be met in School Road and directed to the best possible area to park – either playground or the main school driveway. They should be informed of where the fire started and if possible the cause. Only risk areas would be the kitchen, boiler room, cleaners’ cupboard & PTA shed (gas cylinders)
What training the employees need and the arrangements for ensuring training is given……
- The Competent Fire Person will attend course to be given by WBC
- Fire Wardens have been identified and have attended Fire Warden training.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS TYPES & COLOURS
All fire extinguishers manufacture to BS EN3 are now red. However extinguishers can still carry a small area of colour as used on older fire extinguishers making them easy to identify; these are displayed below.
