Example 1: A car company calculates the annual cost of a specific small car to be $10512.

a) Calculate the monthly cost of the car.

Monthly cost = annual cost ÷ 12

= $10512 ÷ 12

= $876 per month

b)  Assuming that 24 000 km are driven in a year, calculate the cost per kilometre to drive this car.

Cost per kilometre = annual cost ÷ kilometres driven per year

= $10512 ÷ 24 000

= $0.438 per kilometre (or 43.8 ¢/km)

Example 2: How much does it cost to fill up a tank that holds 50L when gas is $1.19/L?

Cost of Gas = litres of gas x cost per litre

= 50 x 1.19

= $59.50
