  1. “CLASSROOM CORNER”: What is happening in each grade?

5th Grade

LA - Students will be focusing on figurative language and point of view with the class read, Because of Mr. Terupt. Also, we will be concentrating on using context clues to figure out meanings of words. Please, help us at home by reinforcing practice on studyisland.com, learning.com, and

SS- We will be getting ready for our trips to BizTown (February 2nd and 3rd) by focusing on economics.

SC -After wrapping up our space unit, we will be moving on to learning about forces and motion! We will also focus on preparing for the new state science test that will be given in February.

M - We will be working on fractions and decimals. Decimal standards will be reinforced with Biz Town activities. We will also continue with PARCC practice questions and problem solving strategies.

6th Grade

LA - Students will be focusing on figurative language as we begin our poetry unit. They will also be doing a lot of PARCC preparation practice which basically covers a variety of the LA curriculum.

SS -

SC - This month we are starting our study of cells. Students will be introduced to cells, their discovery, and their diversity. Microscopes will be introduced, and used to view a variety of cells so we can compare and contrast their similarities and differences.

M - Students will be working on dividing and building expressions. We will also be looking at the PARCC tutorial so students are familiar with all the different buttons and tools that are in this new online assessment along with sample problems.

7th grade

LA - We will be focusing on reading and synthesizing multiple texts in order to focus on the Performance-Based Assessment February 25-26. We will jump back on the grammar train this nine weeks. Also, we will be focusing on our Q3 vocabulary words, critical assessment vocabulary, and Greek/Latin roots. Independent Reading #3 will be ongoing and due March 5. Students will also be writing a research paper on an animal of their choice to inform their classmates.

SS - We will be focusing on the importance of trade to the West African empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai in the beginning of January. From there we will begin our study of cultural and technological developments in China after 220 AD.

SC - We will be starting a new unit on the Atmosphere. We will be studying the composition, temperature layers, chemical processes, heat transfer, and other characteristics of our atmosphere.

M -

ACCM7/8-

8th Grade

LA - LA students will be studying Greek and Latin Roots along with various aspects of grammar. We will also be continuing our PARCC preparation. Students can prepare at home through the following website

SS - Students will start exploring the beginning of the United States government and how the Untied States expanded.

SC - Students will be investigating plate tectonics and earthquakes.

M - Algebra will be studying Exponential Functions including their graphs and equations. Math students will be studying Linear Functions and how to calculate their slope. Math students will also be analyzing scatterplots.

Exploratories

choir- 7th and 8th Grade Choir New year! New music!! Students will focus on learning new choral pieces and dig deeper into the theory behind the music.

band-

PE- We will begin the semester playing cooperative games and getting to know each other.

health-

computer tech-Wortz Starting in January, it's a new semester. For the students who have me, they need to walk to the high school and meet me at the main entrance.

computer tech- Shaffer We are beginning a new semester in January. We will focus on keyboarding skills and tools on Microsoft Word. Eighth graders will be starting Photoshop.

art- New students! New Ideas! New Projects! New Year!! The art room will be full of excitement as we work in clay in all grade levels. This ensures it has time to be dried, fired, glazed. A process which takes some time with our A/B schedule.Updates to be announced.

general music-

CBI (Career Based Instruction) - We will be starting our Finance Unit in January. Students will learn about checking and savings accounts, credit, identity theft. . . The Ohio Attorney General’s Office will be coming in to talk about Scams/Identity Theft and the Delaware County Bank will come in to present on savings and checking accounts. Our service project for the month is making sleeping bags for the homeless shelters. The project is through Share at We are in need of mens gently used or new neck ties - these are what we use as handles for the bag. Please bring in any items to Mrs. Tina Francis at BVMS and/or check out the website above.

Life skills-

Mrs. Poydence- We’ll be learning about World Snow Day in January. Activities, from reading materials to arts & crafts, will focus on the theme of snow. We plan on making a tasty icy treat also!

Mrs. Marshall (7th grade teacher) dresses up as scrooge to go along with her hands-on lesson.
