Dear Sixth Grade Parents:

Our sixth grade field trips are planned, and we are ready to collect money from students. Because of the nature of these field trips, students need to reflect positive Montford Middle School behavior. Students must adhere to the following:

·  Grade Point Average of at least 2.0 on the report card prior to each field trip date

·  No Out of School Suspension disciplinary action

·  No more than two assignments of ISD

·  No “1’s” in conduct on the report card prior to each field trip date

·  No more than one “2” in conduct on the report card prior to each field trip date

·  No overdue books from the media center or lost textbooks

These guidelines are effective August 19th , the day they were presented at the grade-level assembly. Students who do not attend any field trip will be given alternate assignments at school that day. These assignments will be correlated to the standards and benchmarks for each content area covered on each field trip. Each student’s teachers will assess assignments for grades in appropriate classes.

Field Trip #1: On November 21st the 6th graders will be traveling to the IMAX Challenger Learning Center in downtown Tallahassee for a science-oriented field trip. We will view two IMAX movies. Students will bring bag lunches that day. A snack will be included. We will depart Montford via school buses at 10:00 am and return at 1:30 pm. The two movies are described below. The number of students who can attend this trip is limited by the number of seats in the theater. Therefore, seats will be given in the order we receive payment.

A Beautiful Planet 3D

A Beautiful Planet is a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space, providing a unique perspective and increased understanding of our planet and galaxy as never seen before. Made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet — and the effects humanity has had on it over time — captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). From space, Earth blazes at night with the electric intensity of human expansion — a direct visualization of our changing world. But it is within our power to protect the planet. As we continue to explore and gain knowledge of our galaxy, we also develop a deeper connection to the place we all call home. From IMAX Entertainment and Toni Myers — the acclaimed filmmaker behind celebrated IMAX® documentaries Blue Planet, Hubble 3D, and Space Station 3D — A Beautiful Planet presents an awe-inspiring glimpse of Earth and a hopeful look into the future of humanity

Prehistoric Planet 3D

For the first time in movie history, audiences will truly see and feel what it was like when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.
Recent discoveries and a breakthrough in technology will introduce new and unique dinosaurs that are more real than ever before and put moviegoers in the middle of a thrilling prehistoric adventure, where an underdog dinosaur triumphs against all odds to become a hero for the ages. Our main characters are a herd of large, frilled, plant eating dinosaurs – Pachyrhinosaurus. The film follows their youngsters through the seasons and the challenges of growing up and establishing themselves in this prehistoric world. From the moment they hatch, they face predators, extremes of weather and natural disaster as they fight for survival.
Walking with Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D is an immersive 3D experience – the characters are animated throughout against real backgrounds. It’s the most authentic dinosaur experience ever to be seen on the giant screen. The animals’ bodies and movements have been precisely built up from fossil evidence and their behavior is derived from both paleontology and detailed knowledge of the behavior of modern animals. Even their body language has been inspired by what we know of real animal behavior and gives these creatures an amazing realism.

Field Trip #2: On May 4, 2017, we will travel via tour buses to Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta, GA. We will leave Montford at 8:00 am, tour the park, view the animal shows, ride the rides, eat lunch, and return that evening at 5:30 pm. Wild Adventures offers programs and shows pertaining to wildlife and habitats as well as hands-on opportunities for students to learn about environmental concerns for our endangered animals. A field trip T-Shirt and lunch are included in the field trip cost. If you are a Wild Adventures pass holder, you will pay $50.00 for this field trip instead of $70.00. You must send in a copy of your current Wild Adventures pass.

The total cost for both of these trips is $90.00. Please make checks payable to Montford Middle School. Students attending these activities must have a completed activity form on file in the school office with insurance information listed. There will be no refunds if a student is excluded from any field trip due to an infraction of any of the behavior guidelines listed above. Other refunds are only issued for emergency situations as determined by the team. If your student plans to participate in both field trips, he/she may pay in two payments of $45.00 each or one payment of $90.00. If your child plans to attend one field trip, full payment for that field trip is due during the week of October 3rd. IMAX field trip cost is 20.00; Wild Adventures field trip cost is $70.00. Funds remaining after field trip costs are covered will be used for scholarships for students with financial needs and end of the year activities/celebrations/supplies. To ensure your student’s place on the field trip list, the appropriate payment is due during the week of October 3-7, 2016. For students paying in two installments for both field trips, the final payment is due the week of March 6-10, 2017. Please return the attached sheet with payment. Payments will be collected from 8:45 – 9:15 am in the gym during the week of October 3-7, 2016 and March 6-10, 2017 only!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Paige Loggins, Sixth Grade Team Leader
