The World Cup

Its Geographic Impact on the World

Background: Soccer (or futbol as it is known is most other parts of the world) is probably the truest word-wide team sport. In 2014, the World Cup came to the continent of South America, particularly to Brazil. This is certainly an ambitious project for any country, but especially for a country with well known problems (economic crisis, flooding, lack of public transportation, corruption).

So, why is Brazil taking such a risk? Why are they building soccer stadiums, upgrading neighborhoods in and around the facilities, infrastructure, and welcoming the world into the country when there are hundreds of thousands of its’ citizens suffering from so many harsh conditions, battling life and death, without the full help the government should provide? This study should provide an invigorating debate regarding these thoughts, and, to a more overarching investigation, the role of sports, recreation, and tourism play on a global level.

Project Overview: The leaders of Brazil have put you (and your partner) in charge of deciding whether or not to have the FIFA World Cup. You will need to

Learn about the history of Brazil and the FIFA World Cup

Argue why Brazil should have the World Cup

Plan for how to make the World Cup successful

Understand why Brazilians would protest the World Cup

Decide if Brazil should have had the World Cup during the summer of 2014

1) Brazil today has been shaped by events during the last 300 years. You will need to research what has made Brazil the country it is today, and how its history is still affecting citizens today. Also, defining Key terms over the FIFA world cup will help understand the impact of this major tournament. (Complete Key terms and research table)

2) In order to host the World Cup the country must campaign to FIFA to be chosen as the host. The first step in the project will be for you and your partner to create a campaign that you feel would outline some of the positive aspects of Brazil that make it a desirable location.

a. Campaign Posters

  1. Make sure to create some type of campaign slogan

b. Campaign Presentation (Google Slides)

3) Upon receiving the World Cup you would immediately enter the planning phase for Brazil. Luckily for you Brazil has already done this part. You and your partner will research what changes Brazil had to make to their infrastructure in order to be able to host the World Cup and place it in the graphic organizers provided.

  1. Location map of stadiums
  2. Cost of all stadiums
  3. Pictures/Drawings of stadiums
  4. Compare and Contrast Brazil’s planning phase to what other countries have done in the past for World Cups or Olympic games
  5. South Africa 2010 (World Cup)
  6. Sochi, Russia 2014 (Winter Olympics)
  7. Beijing, China 2008 (Summer Olympics)
  8. United States 1994 (World Cup)

Choose either 4 or 5

4) The next phase is to rationalize your decision for hosting the World Cup to your people. Leading up to the 2014 World Cup there were protest throughout the country by upset citizens because their government decided to host the World Cup.

a. Official Document (google docs) – 1 page single spaced

Resources:

OR

5) If you agree with the protesters in Brazil you may also argue their side. Why would the citizens be mad at their government? (Total cost approximately $14 billion)

  1. Official Document (google docs) – 1 page single spaced

6) Finally, outline the successes and failures of the 2014 World Cup. (Google Doc)
