  3. In this lesson, both a mock air rifle and an actual air rifle will be 'fired' to help the Cadets learn how air rifles work.
  4. Place one of the unit's air rifles on a demonstration table with open action and an open bold indicator (OBI) inserted.
  5. Prepare each team a table with a can of compressed air, plastic straw, tape, silly putty, a few balls of aluminum foil, and a stick.
  6. Make copies for distribution of Exercise #2: How Rifles Work.
  7. Access the Exercise #2: How Rifles Work Answer Key.

Student Learning Activity / Teaching Notes
Direct Cadet Focus: Ask Cadets to think about how air rifles work.
This phase of the lesson allows Cadets to practice using the new skill or knowledge.
  1. OBSERVE a demonstration on how to clean an air rifle.
/ To first demonstrate how rifling works; use a cleaning rod or small dowel rod that fits inside the air rifle barrel.
Place a cleaning patch or small piece of cotton on the end of the rod so that it fits snuggly when it is inserted in the muzzle end of the barrel.
Wrap a piece of colored tape around the other end of the rod/dowel so that the tape projects out from the rod in one direction.
Slowly push the rod/dowel into the barrel while pointing out how the tape is beginning to rotate. Explain how this rotation is caused by the rifling or spiral grooves cut in the barrel.
  1. OBSERVE a demonstration on shooting an air rifle.
/ To show how an actual air rifle works, cock the air rifle to charge it with air, load a pellet into the breach, and release the trigger to fire it.
While this is done, the rifle must continue to be pointed down range at the target backstop.
If you have Daisy M853 air rifles, explain that this rifle is a "pneumatic" air rifle that stores energy when the cocking lever is opened and closed to compress air into a chamber that stores the compressed air (stored energy) until it is released.
If your unit has air rifles that use compressed air or CO2 cylinders, explain how a larger quantity of compressed gas is stored into the main cylinder of those rifles. Each time the rifle is cocked and the trigger released, the gas is then released a small portion at a time.
To help Cadets understand how rifling makes rifles so accurate that they could hit exactly the same point on the target each time the rifle is aimed in exactly the same way; compare a spinning pellet to a spinning toy top.
  1. ASSEMBLE and shoot a mock air rifle with your team. COACH others on their assembly as needed.
/ Direct each team to assemble around a demonstration table.
Ask each team to use the objects on the table to make a mock air rifle. The straw should be used as the barrel. When they attach the barrel, be sure they keep their demonstration air rifle pointed down range and away from any class members. They will need to use the tape or silly putty to seal the end of the straw onto the nozzle of the air can. They should use the stick as a “ramrod” to push the foil projectile into the straw after it is sealed.
If some teams have trouble, invite members from successful teams to coach or guide them.
When each team has a mock air rifle ready to fire, have one member from each team release the trigger on the air can. The puff of air should fire the projectile out of the straw towards the target.
  1. COMPLETE Exercise #2: How Rifles Work.
/ Direct Cadets to complete Exercise #2: How Rifles Work. Review the correct answers using Exercise #2: Answer Key for How Rifles Work.
  1. REFLECT on the exercise using a mock air rifle. ANSWER the reflection questions presented by your instructor.
/ Use these Reflection Questions as tools to focus Cadet discussion, reflection on learning, and note taking as you feel appropriate for your Cadet population.
  • What influenced your thoughts when you made the mock air rifle?
  • What new insights did you gain from making the mock air rifle?

Conclude this phase of learning by summarizing the purpose of the activity and informing Cadets that they will now apply the new knowledge or skill through the assignment or activity outlined in the performance assessment task.
Total Time: 40 minutes
Self-paced Option: Instruct self-paced learning Cadets to complete the Process Phase learning activities for this phase of learning. Modify activities as necessary for your Cadet.

Remind Cadets that lesson assessment tasks can be used as evidence of learning and are solid artifacts to add to their Cadet Portfolios.
  1. REVIEW the key words of this lesson.
/ Key words connect concepts and principles introduced in the text and learning activities. After activities are complete, Cadets should be able to complete a quick check on each word and define it properly.
Remind Cadets that key words were introduced throughout various learning activities and should not be ‘new’ to them.
Instruct Cadets that you are going to see how well they remember the key word meanings and launch the automated response slides or one of several animated games.
Remember to use your digital timer in Curriculum Manager to set a reasonable time limit for this activity.
  1. REFLECT on what you have learned in this lesson and how you might use it in the future.
/ Use these Reflection Questions as tools to focus Cadet discussion, reflection on learning, and note taking as you feel appropriate for your Cadet population.
  • What would you like to review before firing an air rifle on your own?
  • What can you do to prepare yourself before firing an air rifle on your own?
  • How do you think you will react when firing an air rifle on your own?

Can Cadets answer the Lesson Question(s) now:What are the functions of marksmanship equipment? What is the proper operation of the equipment?
Allow some time for discussion.
Total Time: 5 minutes
Self-paced Option: Instruct self-paced learning Cadets to complete the Apply Phase learning activities for this phase of learning. Modify activities as necessary for your Cadet.
