Attendance and Make-up Work

I expect you to be present in class every day. If you are absent, make-up work is your responsibility – I will not remind you to obtain or complete work.

Any assignments that were due must be turned in the first day you return. Any make-up work needed must be obtained from the appropriate folder upon return.

Students have one day to make up missed work for each day absent. (Exceptions are tests and labs, for which you may be given up to 1 week to make-up, depending on the length of absence).

Tests and labs must be made-up during 6thperiod. You must stay until you have finished the test or lab. In addition, if you need help with other make-up work, you must obtain it during bonus period.

If you are absent for a field trip, you will not receive extra time to make-up work and are responsible for that day’s work as if you were in class. See me for your work ahead of time and to turn in any assignments that will be due.

Assignments and Grading

All homework and assignments are due on the due date, at the beginning of class. Late work may be corrected but will be given a score of ZERO.

Homework and other assignments will be on the daily agenda powerpoint. It is your responsibility to know and complete the assignment; I will now always give verbal reminders.

Your 3-ring binder must be kept up to date and organized with class materials.In addition you will receive an ENTRY SHEET to keep track of your assignments.There will be periodic binder quizzes to grade your binders.

Students are expected to do their own work; copied or plagiarized work will receive a zero. See student handbook for further detail.

Weighted grades:

Tests = 50%

Quizzes = 25%

Homework and Labs = 25%

Labs

Lab procedures will usually be given ahead of time to read and study. You should come to class prepared for labs with appropriate materials and be familiar with the procedures.

Lab safety rules should be followed at all times; no exceptions! Consequences for violating lab safety rules are as follows (these may be modified per the teachers discretion):

1st time:Immediate removal from the lab and zero credit for the lab.

2nd time:Disciplinary referral and immediate removal from lab and zero credit.

3rd time:No participation in future labs and zero credit for those labs.

Since you will often work on labs with a partner or group your data may match other students. However, answers to questions on lab should be done individually. Students turning in identical answers will receive a score of ZERO.

Tests and Quizzes

Essential Standards Quizzes will be given starting about halfway through the trimester. These quizzes cover the most important material of the trimester and are comprehensive. They are designed to help students do advanced studying for the final. Due to the importance of these quizzes, a minimum score is required and students must attend bonus period if the minimum score is not obtained.

Tests will be given at the end of each unit and format will vary. I will give details of each test prior to test day.

End of Course Assessment

When students complete the second trimester of Biology, they are required to take a standardized test administered by the state of Indiana. The test is meant to measure the student’s proficiency in Biology, and is required for graduation. The content covered in this class is designed not only to give students a solid foundation in biology concepts, but also to prepare them to succeed on this test.

The student is asked to sign below to signify that these classroom expectations and rules have been shared with him/her and that any questions/concerns have been answered on the date written. Students are also asked to share these with their parent/guardian and have them sign as well. This is your first assignment and you will receive a grade for completing it.
