BIBILOGRAPHY AND OUTLINING ASSIGNMENT *

The purpose of this assignment is to help you to gather and evaluate information for your chapter presentation by using a variety of sources. The outcome will be a list of sources for your speeches, as well as a compilation of relevant information on your topic (in the form of an annotated bibliography) that will help you generate a specific purpose and thesis statement for your speech.
If at any time you feel that you need additional assistance, please feel free to visit the Reference Desk at Carrier or East Campus Libraries or chat online with a librarian at http://www.lib.jmu.edu (click on the logo entitled “Ask a Librarian”). If visiting the library in person, it would be very helpful to bring this assignment with you.
This assignment stresses the following learning objectives for this course:
· Understand and apply the fundamentals of audience analysis, message construction, development, organization and presentation including electronically.
· Deliver oral presentations in a variety of small group contexts such as symposiums, forums, panels, etc.
What to Do:
1. Review your chosen film and communication concepts. Identify terms that would benefit from additional sources. Make a list of those terms with your group.
2. Complete Go for the Gold Modules 3 and 8 and report your scores to Prof. Clarke and your group members.
a. Reporting your scores to Ms. Clarke requires you to fill in my e-ID (clark2ee) at the end of the test module.
3. Go to the following page - http://www.lib.jmu.edu/resources/
a. Look under “Research Resources by Type of Information”, and select “Encyclopedias, Dictionaries and Almanacs.”
i. Choose one of the following: Gale Virtual Reference Library, Sage eReference, or Blackwell Reference Online
b. You can also use this search page to find the following:
i. Film reviews
ii. Books on your subject
iii. Journal articles
4. When you complete your search, the group should have at least 5 (five) sources that include:
a. Book from LEO
b. An article from a General Database Resource (such as Academic Search Complete)
c. A journal article from a Specific Subject Database Resources
d. Two film reviews (such as New York Times or Internet Movie Database)
5. Now, complete your bibliography using either MLA or APA format. If you are unsure how to cite, see http://www.lib.jmu.edu/help/checkcite
6. Evaluate the sources and prepare an annotated bibliography by answering the following questions in bulleted format: (refer to notes on “Evaluating Sources”)
· How will this information be useful in your speech?
· What are the author’s credentials or the article’s intended audience if you can determine it
· Does the author support and document statements made?
· Are there any biases? What are they?
· Is the publication date current enough for your subject?
7. Finally, outline your presentation based on which terms and film you plan to present, who will present them and where your additional sources will fit. Follow the outline guide below. At the top of your paper in the left hand corner, make sure you include your header as specified in the “Guidelines for Papers” (last page of class syllabus). Under your header you should have the following information:

2. Plot/Moral Lesson of the Film (cite source)
3. Film Reviews (cite source)

*This assignment specifically depends on your knowledge of Go for the Gold Modules 3 (Searching a Database) and 8 (Search Strategy for Research Papers and Speeches). This assignment also enhances students information literacy skills by helping them:

2. Evaluating information and its sources critically and incorporate selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system (Standard 3)
