Attendance and Grading Policy 2011
Attendance
Band/Guard members are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances. Guard is a co-curricular course, with rehearsals and performances being part of the grading process. Students must be on time for all band functions.
EXCUSED ABSENCE FROM REHEARSAL. Except in cases of extreme emergency or illness, band/guard members will not be excused from rehearsals. In case of illness, students are asked to call the Guard Director (407-758-4626) as early as possible. A written excuse from the parent or guardian is due at the following class or rehearsal. Appointments should be made on days we do not have practice. Check your calendar. Notification does not automatically classify the absence as excused.
Requests for a pre-planned absence should be submitted three weeks prior to the intended absence. All absences affect the grade due to lost instruction time. Two or more absences may result in that individual being placed on alternate status.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM REHEARSAL
An unexcused absence will result in the loss of the third quarter break or having to sit out during the performance during the Marching Band season. Doctor’s appointments, family vacations, lessons, detention, family plans, other appointments are unexcused.
TARDY TO REHEARSAL OR PERFORMANCE
Attendance will always be taken at the beginning of the event. Tardiness may result in the loss of the third quarter break. If a student is late three times, it will count as one unexcused absence.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to be in class every day. A student who attends school during the day and does not attend class in the evening will result in an unexcused absence.
Absence from a Performance
Excused absences must be approved by the director at least three weeks in advance. Any absence that is not brought to the director’s attention for approval prior to the performance will be considered unexcused. Unexcused absences will affect your grade.
(Notification does not automatically classify an absence as excused.)
Participation/Attendance:
Each student earns a 100% for attendance and participation each day they are in class and do the expected work.
Excused absences will receive a 100% for attendance but loss of participation points, so their daily grade will be a 60% for the day. The same calculations are used for being at rehearsal and not participating/sitting out.
Unexcused absences will receive a 0% for attendance and participation.
**Students can make up their loss of participation points for excused absences by completing an alternative assignment or staying late to make up the time. Please see the instructor for scheduling make up work session. Make up time will be held on Tuesdays between the 2 practices.
Rehearsal Attendance:
Rehearsals are considered to be Thursday 2:30-5:30 and Friday before the game.

0% if you are absent
