Grade 3: Unit 3.OA.C.7, Operations and Algebraic Thinking--Multiply and divide within 100.
Lesson Seed: Triangle Flashcard (Lesson seeds are ideas for the domain/cluster/standard that can be used to build a lesson.
Lesson Seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction.)
Domain: Operations and Algebraic ThinkingCluster: Multiply and Divide with 100
Standard(s): Standard(s): 3.OA.C.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 x 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
NOTE: Finding single-digit products and related quotients is a required fluency for grade 3. Reaching fluency will take much of the year for many students. These skills and the understandings that support them are crucial; students will rely on them for years to come as they learn to multiply and divide with multi-digit numbers and to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with fractions. After multiplication and division situations have been established, reasoning about patterns in products (e.g., products involving factors of 5 and 9) can help students remember particular products and quotients. Practice – and if necessary, extra support – should continue all year for those who need it to attain fluency.
Purpose/Big Idea:
Students will develop fluency of multiplication and division within 100 using fact triangles
Materials:

· Resource Sheet 2: Two’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 3: Two’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 4: Three’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 5: Three’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 6: Four’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 7: Four’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 8: Five’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 9: Five’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 10: Six’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 11: Six’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 12: Seven’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 13: Seven’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 14: Eight’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 15: Eight’s Factors Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 16: Nine’s Products Triangle Test
· Resource Sheet 17: Nine’s Factors Triangle Test
Activity:
· Distribute copies of Resource Sheets 1A-D: Triangular Fact Cards to all students.
· Have them cut out the triangles.
· As students are cutting ask them to think about how the three numbers are related to each other.
· Facilitate a class discussion about how the numbers relate.
· Have students write the numeric expressions for each family on the back.
· Have them work in pairs to practice the facts together.
· As appropriate over time, pass out individual fact triangle tests (Resource Sheets 2-17) to assess student fluency for the different tables.
Guiding Questions:
· How would you start to figure out a product you don’t know?
· Which properties help you solve a multiplication fact?
· Can you think of a related fact to help you solve an unknown fact?
· How can you use multiplication to solve a division fact?
· How does one equation help you generate the other three?
· What is the relationship between the numbers on each card?
