IV.COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will prepare the student to care for patients with complex and higher acuity conditions.

To satisfactorily complete this course, the student must achieve a grade of C or above according to the following system:

85 – 92 =B

80 – 84 =C

72 – 79 =D

0 – 71=F

VII.COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The learner will:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the concepts and exemplars presented in this course and be able to correlate those concepts and exemplars to the provision of nursing care to those with acute and complex conditions.
  2. Prioritize and provide care in consideration of the diverse values, beliefs, and attitudes for patiens with complex and higher acutity needs.
  3. Exhibit a well developed level of communication and interdisciplinary collobaration to obtain information and resources to coordinate patient care.
  4. Assimilate the use of technology and findiigs noted via the health care information system to coordinate patient care.
  1. Exemplify professionalism and demonstrate and ethical behaviors while providing care to patients with acute and complex conditions.
  2. Evaluate plan of care to identify actions to improve use of resources.

VIII.COURSE METHODOLOGY:

Concept based education featuring exemplars to demonstrate concepts, reinforced with lecture, discussion, group activities, assignments, critical thinking exercises, skills and simulation laboratory exercises, course examinations, and clinical practice to optimize student learning. The instructor will demonstrate skills and students will be expected to return the demonstration. Competency evaluations will be utilized in the lab and clinical settings.

IX.COURSE OUTLINE:

The instructor will incorporate the following concepts related to professional nursing practice throughout the course:

  • Introduction to critical care nursing
  • Gas exchange and oxygenation (ARDS, ventilator assistance)
  • Acid/base balance (compensation of acid/base inbalances)
  • Fluid/electrolytes
  • Clotting and VTE, MI, Ischemic Stroke, PE
  • Fluid and electrolytes
  • Glucose regulation
  • Hormonal regulation
  • Cellular regulation

X.OTHER REQUIRED TEXTS, SOFTWARE, AND MATERIALS:

Required learning resources from previous Nursing courses may be utilized. Elsevier’s Nursing Concepts Online 2.0. Desktop, laptop, or tablet running Windows 7 or later or Mac OSX 10.8 or later. Not all required software/online resources will work with Android or iOS. High speed internet must be accessible.

XI.EVALUATION:

Knowledge is evaluated through performance evaluation of student’s ability to meet objectives related to the lecture component of course. Students will be informed of the specific evaluation tool and their respective values on the first day of class.

Lab and clinical practice is evaluated by student knowledge and application of that knowledge in the lab and clinical settings. Students are to demonstrate progress toward course objectives as evidenced by specific behaviors noted in the lab and clinical evaluation tools for this course.

Standardized testing will be completed per policy.
