GTL 2000: Introduction to Europe

GTL 2000 is a one-hour weekly course that combines lectures, travel talks, field trips, and activities in order to introduce summer students to contemporary Europe. The main purpose of the course is to enhance students’ cultural experiences in Metz and across the continent. The course includes two required field trips: a visit to the Hackenburg fortress and the American cemetery at Saint Avold, and a trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Optional local field trips will also be offered to places in Metz such as the Arsenal concert hall or Opera-Theatre house, Pompidou Center, Robert Schuman House, and Fort Queuleu. GTL 2000 also includes optional activities, such as a scavenger hunt and short film contest.
Grading and Attendance
Grading in GTL 2000 is based strictly on participation. There will be no tests, exams, or quizzes. Students currently receive letter grades. Students will be allowed two unexcused absences before their grade drops a letter. Each additional absence will result in the loss of a further letter grade. Required field trips will count as two absences, as follows:

Students should also participate in at least one local field trip or activity (see list below). Not completing one of the several possible local field trips or activities will count as a single absence.
Students can sign out Flip Video cameras to create short films. Prizes will be awarded for the first three places in both the scavenger hunt and short film contests.
Reading Material
There is no required reading material for the course.
Honor Policy
Students are expected to abide by the Georgia Tech honor code in their class conduct. All infractions will be treated with the utmost seriousness.
