Corn-based plastics are the first non-petroleum, plant-based plastic to be used widely. But are they as useful and practical as petroleum-based plastics? One might expect that, being made from plant-based materials, corn plastics would be easily biodegradable. Although this would seem to be the case, current corn-based plastics must be transported to special incineration sites and heated in order for decomposition to take place—often consuming greater amounts of petroleum products than were saved by using corn as the primary material. Another disadvantage is that corn-based plastics are heat sensitive. They melt if filled with hot food or placed in a microwave—a quality that limit their usefulness at this stage of development. However, plastic developed from corn has some “green” qualities: it is made from a renewable resource, and it does not emit toxic fumes when it burns. Further, it can biodegrade, albeit with the addition of heat. Are plant-based plastics a green product after all? The informed consumer must weigh the factors and draw his or her own conclusion.

30. ( B ) How does the writer seem to feel about plant-based plastics?

  1. They are totally useless.
  2. They are useful, but not perfect.
  3. They should not be used for anything.

閱讀理解 IV (Reading Comprehension IV)

It has been said that the mind is a terrible thing to waste. Indeed, having a powerful, focused intellect is an important quality, no matter what field of work you are in. It seems that there is no limit to what you can learn in our current age of information, as long as you look in the right places. This leads many to ponder whether or not the human mind is capable of greater feats than the simple acquisition of knowledge and experience. Many believe that the mind is capable of much more, and go so far as to say that telekinesis (influencing the physical world through thought alone) is possible. Anyone who has seen the first Matrix film will recall the young child who bends the spoon using the power of his mind. Indeed, spoon bending might seem like a fairly useless skill, but if it truly is possible, it may open the door to much greater feats. 閱讀理解 V (Reading Comprehension V)

Although many young adults can’t wait to move out on their own, more and more of them are choosing to remain in their current family living situation. In Asianand European households, it is commonplace for men and women to remain living with their families well beyond their thirtieth birthdays. In North America, however, this is often frowned upon. Men and women still living at home might be considered lazy, and be scoffed at for their lack of independence. So, which situation is better? Of course, no two people and no two families are identical, so it is impossible to say for sure. However, studies have shown that families who stick together often lead richer and fuller lives than those who split up. Perhaps the feeling of isolation that urban and suburban bachelors often feel could be soothed by regular contact with people that they know and love. On the other hand, these same family members may trigger stress and unease, as old relationship issues often remain on the surface. Move out or stay put? The choice you make is an important one to consider.
