The Little Red Hen
(Retold from Joseph Jacobs)
One day as the Little Red Hen was scratching in a field, she found some grains of wheat.
"This wheat should be planted," she said. "Who will plant these grains of wheat?"
"Not I," said the Dippy Duck, “I’m too busy swimming.”
"Not I," said the Crafty Cat, “I’m too busy purring.”
"Not I," said the Dozy Dog, “I’m too busy sleeping.”
“Not I,” said the Wallowing Pig, “I’m too busy squelching.”
"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
Soon the wheat grew to be tall and yellow.
"The wheat is ripe," said the Little Red Hen. "Who will cut the wheat?"
"Not I," quacked the Dippy Duck, “I’m too busy swimming.”
"Not I," miaowed the Crafty Cat, “I’m too busy purring.”
"Not I," snored the Dozy Dog, “I’m too busy sleeping.”
“Not I,” chortled the Wallowing Pig, “I’m too busy squelching.”
"Then I will," replied the Little Red Hen. And she did.
When the wheat was cut, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will thresh the wheat?"
"Not I," moaned the Dippy Duck, “I’m too busy swimming.”
"Not I," mumbled the Crafty Cat, “I’m too busy purring.”
"Not I," woofed the Dozy Dog, “I’m too busy sleeping.”
“Not I,” squealed the Wallowing Pig, “I’m too busy squelching.”
"Then I will," shrugged the Little Red Hen. And she did.
When the wheat was threshed, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will take this wheat to the mill?"
"Not I," yelled the Dippy Duck, “I’m too busy swimming.”
"Not I," yowled the Crafty Cat, “I’m too busy purring.”
"Not I," yawned the Dozy Dog, “I’m too busy sleeping.”
“Not I,” spluttered the Wallowing Pig, “I’m too busy squelching.”
"Then I will," whispered the Little Red Hen. And she did.
She took the wheat to the mill and had it ground into flour. Then she said, "Who will make this flour into bread?"
"Not I," sighed the Dippy Duck, “I’m too busy swimming.”
"Not I," whinged the Crafty Cat, “I’m too busy purring.”
"Not I," growled the Dozy Dog, “I’m too busy sleeping.”
“Not I,” glugged the Wallowing Pig, “I’m too busy squelching.”
"Then I will," snarled the Little Red Hen. And she did.
She made and baked the bread. Then she said, "Who will eat this bread?"
"Oh! I will," cheered the Dippy Duck.
"And I will," purred the Crafty Cat.
"And I will," barked the Dozy Dog.
“And I will,” gurgled the Wallowing Pig.
"No, No!" shouted the Little Red Hen. "I will do that." And she did.

The Story of Chicken Licken
Once upon a time there was a small yellow chicken. Her name was Chicken Licken. Now it so happened that Chicken Licken was pecking about in the dirt one day, when, plop! An acorn fell of her little yellow head, nearly knocking her over. Chicken Licken looked up into the clear blue sky and thought, “Oh No! The sky is falling down! I must hurry to warn the king.”
So Chicken Licken ran off, and as she was running along, she met Henny Penny.
“Hello Chicken Licken,” clucked Henny Penny. “Where are you running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will come with you,” said Henny Penny. And the two friends hurried on together.
They had not gone far when they met Goosy Lucy. “Hello Chicken Licken and Henny Penny,” squawked Goosy Lucy. “Where are you two running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will come with you,” said Goosy Lucy. And the three friends hurried on together.
They had not gone far when they met Cocky Locky. “Hello Chicken Licken, Henny Penny and Goosy Lucy,” crowed Cocky Locky. “Where are you all running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will come with you,” said Cocky Locky. And the four friends hurried on together.
They had not gone much further when they met Lucky Ducky. “Hello Chicken Licken, Henny Penny, Goosy Lucy and Cocky Locky” quacked Lucky Ducky. “Where are you all running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will come with you,” said Lucky Ducky. And the five friends hurried on together.
They had not gone much further when they met Drakey Lakey. “Hello Chicken Licken, Henny Penny, Goosy Lucy, Cocky Locky and Lucky Ducky” screeched Drakey Lakey. “Where are you all running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will come with you,” said Drakey Lakey. And the six friends hurried on together.
They had not gone much further when they met Turkey Lurkey. “Hello Chicken Licken, Henny Penny, Goosy Lucy, Cocky Locky, Lucky Ducky and Drakey Lakey” gobbled Turkey Lurkey. “Where are you all running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will come with you,” said Turkey Lurkey. And the seven friends hurried on together.
They were running along in a busy little line when they met Mr Foxy Woxy. “Hello Chicken Licken, Henny Penny, Goosy Lucy, Cocky Locky, Lucky Ducky, Drakey Lakey and Turkey Lurkey” growled Mr Foxy Woxy. “Where are you all running off to in such a hurry on this fine morning?”
“Why,” squeaked Chicken Licken. “The sky is falling down! I saw it myself with my own two eyes. A piece of sky landed, plop, on my head! I must hurry to warn the king.”
“Then I will show you where he lives,” whispered Mr Foxy Woxy, licking his lips. My Foxy Woxy led them round to a shed at the back of the farm.
“Are you sure this is where the King lives?” asked Chicken Licken, Henny Penny, Goosy Lucy, Cocky Locky, Lucky Ducky, Drakey Lakey and Turkey Lurkey all together.
“Oh, yes! Very sure,” snarled Mr Foxy Woxy. “Go inside. You will see the king at the back of the shed!”
And he opened the door for them all. And Chicken Licken, Henny Penny, Goosy Lucy, Cocky Locky, Lucky Ducky, Drakey Lakey and Turkey Lurkey all trooped into the shed.
And that, I regret to say, is why the king never did hear about how the sky was falling down!

Chicken Licken Animated Tale
One day Chicken Licken was playing under a bridge when suddenly a blue lollipop fell on his head.
Bonk!
‘Ow!’
Poor Chicken Licken didn’t know that it was a lollipop. He thought it was the sky falling down, so he hurried off to tell Zoo Keeper … In no time at all he came to an old crisp packet. Someone was inside it. Was it Zoo Keeper? … No it wasn’t! It was Cyril Squirrel.
‘You’re not Zoo Keeper!’
‘Of course not! I’m Cyril Squirrel.’
‘The sky is falling down and I’m off to tell Zoo Keeper.’
‘Then I’ll come with you.’
So Chicken Licken and Cyril Squirrel walked along until they came to a fence. Someone was behind it. Was it Zoo Keeper? … No it wasn’t! It was Thelma Lemur and Matt the Bat.
‘The sky is falling down and we are off to tell Zoo Keeper.’
‘Oh well, we’ll come with you.’
So Chicken Licken, Cyril Squirrel, Thelma Lemur and Matt the Bat all walked on until they came to a large enclosure. There was someone in it. Was it Zoo Keeper? No, it was Deborah Zebra.
‘The sky is falling down and we must tell Zoo Keeper.’
‘Then I’ll come with you.’
So Chicken Licken, Cyril Squirrel, Thelma Lemur, Matt the Bat and Deborah Zebra all walked on. They came to a large pond and there was someone in it. Was it Zoo Keeper? No, it was Zippo Hippo.
‘The sky is falling down and we must tell Zoo Keeper.’
‘Then I’ll come with you.’
But someone was listening behind a bush. It was Brian Lion.
They want to see Zoo Keeper, do they? Well I’ll pretend to be Zoo Keeper.’
So Chicken Licken, Cyril Squirrel, Thelma Lemur, Matt the Bat, Deborah Zebra and Zippo Hippo walked on until they came to a big and important looking cage. Someone was behind it. Was it Zoo Keeper? It looked like Zoo Keeper.
Something just wasn’t right…
‘Does Zoo Keeper have four legs?’
‘No … I don’t think so.’
‘Does Zoo Keeper have a mane?’
‘and great big teeth?’
‘No, he most certainly does not!’
Yikes!!
Chicken Licken, Cyril Squirrel, Thelma Lemur, Matt the Bat, Deborah Zebra and Zippo Hippo were all safe back at Chicken Licken’s house.
‘Oh, Chicken Licken! That’s not the sky! That is a blue lollipop that a little girl or boy must have dropped by accident.’
‘Whoops!’
