Theater an der Wien – The new opera house

New production in the summer of 2010: “Fledermaus”2011: Closed during the summer months for renovation

The Theater an der Wien is one of the most beautiful theatres in Vienna and is among those with the richest history. Built in 1801 by Mozart’s librettist Emanuel Schikaneder with the composer in mind, the theatre has witnessed a series of historic world premieres, including that of Beethoven’s only opera ‘Fidelio’. For more than two centuries, the theatre has enchanted audiences with its outstanding acoustics and authentic, intimate atmosphere.

In January 2006 the Theater an der Wien was reopened as the new City of Vienna opera house and has since functioned as a stagione opera house with performances throughout the year. The programme includes opera ranging from Monteverdi and Mozart to modern composers and offers a new premiere every month. As a centre for Baroque opera and contemporary music theatre in Vienna, the oldest yet youngest opera house has established itself both at home and across the world. A new production of ‘Fledermaus’ will be premiered in the summer of 2010 and the Theater an der Wien will be closed for renovation work during the summer months of 2011.

High standards of artistic quality are guaranteed by world-class conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs, William Christie, Bertrand de Billy, Christophe Rousset and Sian Edwards as well as renowned opera directors such as Robert Carsen, Harry Kupfer, David Alden and Keith Warner. International opera stars such as Plácido Domingo, Cecilia Bartoli, Angelika Kirchschlager, Christine Schäfer, Diana Damrau, Patricia Petibon, Bejun Mehta and many others ensure that an evening of opera at the Theater an der Wien remains an unforgettable experience.
