MATH 1320 - Elementary Functions

INSTRUCTOR - Glenda Wood

OFFICE - Wells 349

I.Objectives:

The objectives of this course are to give the student an opportunity

A. To learn

1.The basic ideas of algebra needed for a study of functions: real numbers, exponents, polynomials, rational expressions, the number line, equations, inequalities, the rectangular coordinate system, and straight lines.

2.Function notation, graphs of functions, the algebra of functions, and inverse functions.

3.The graphs of quadratic functions, synthetic division, complex zeros, and graphs of rational functions.

4.Exponential and logarithmic functions.

5.The properties of trig functions.

6.Trig identities associated with sums, differences, and multiples of angles.

7.Polar coordinates, trig forms of complex numbers, and vectors in the plane.

8.The standard equation forms for ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas.

B.To have these learning experiences in a Christian environment.

II.Text: PRECALCULUS: FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS. BY BARNETT,ZIEGLER AND BYLEEN 5th edition.

III.Grading policy:

A.Letter grades will be assigned according to the current university catalogue.

B.There will be a test following each chapter of text material covered, and a comprehensive final exam. Make-up tests will not be given unless health conditions warrant or in an extreme emergency. Lack of time for preparation will not be an acceptable reason for postponing a test.

Of course, illness is an acceptable excuse for missing a test, but a note confirming your condition from a health-care official must be presented before a make-up test can be taken.

Each student is required to maintain a notebook in which homework assignments are to be organized. Homework quizzes will be representative of homework problems, and the student will be allowed to refer to this notebook. Be sure to copy the problem and identify the text pages in your notebook. The problems must be copied from the board, and ALL work for a problem should be shown.

In addition, each student is required to maintain an organization/participation folder. This should be a simple folder with brads for insertion of papers. The instructor will provide directions as to the content of this folder, which will count as the participation grade.

C.The final grade will be computed as follows:

(1) The average of the chapter test grades (45%)

(2) The average of the homework quizzes (25%)

(3) The participation score (5%)

(4) The final examination (25%)

***** GRAPHING CALCULATORS WILL BE USED IN THIS CLASS.

***** CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF AND KEPT OUT OF SIGHT DURING CLASS AND DURING TEST-TAKING. EMERGENCY CALLS SHOULD BE ROUTED THROUGH THE CAMPUS OPERATOR OR THE MATH DEPARTMENT. 254-295-4583.

REMEMBER: When you miss class (even with a doctor's excuse) you are responsible for being prepared the day you return to class. Email me or contact a person for the assignment. Don't get a "0"

on a homework quiz on the first day back. After referring to the syllabus, working the problems listed there is usually a safe bet, however, sections are occasionally split. It is the responsibility of the student to get the correct assignment if absent from class.
