Course Description
This course is a theme oriented course for visiting students who are interested in learning both the general aspects and some specific features of the Korean culture. The course deals with various subjects and phenomena in Korea, which include its history, myths and legends, geography, arts, literature, food, sports, leisure culture and traditional music.
Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with Korea and its historical and traditional aspects and values.

The lecture will introduce the fundamentals of Korean traditional music to the students. Beginning with a brief detail of Korean music's historical developments, the bulk of the lecture will cover various genres and their connection to socio-historic context (e.g court and folk). The aim of the lecture is to familiarize students with aesthetic characteristics of traditional music and to provide an understanding of the ways in which these aesthetics developed in their present form. Using recordedaudio-visual examples and live demonstrations on the haegeum, the lecture also aims to introduce students to the sonorities of traditional music and to inspire an interest in this rich musical heritage. / Prof. Hilary V. This lecture is an introduction to the geographic characteristics of the Korean peninsula: the land, the territory, the climate and the weather. A special focus will be put on the traditional aspects of each region.

This lecture is an introduction to the culinary culture of Korea - the traditional dishes and the ingredients used, some culinary techniques, the table manners and the dietary aspects found in the Korean food.
