Fifth Sunday of Easter
BUILDING UP THE CHURCH
It is certainly an important ministry to go and make disciples; it is equally important to ensure the continued strengthening of these disciples. Paul and Barnabas, in our reading from Acts today, are not only adding new disciples to the church of Christ. They are making sure that the work of the church will continue by appointing elders and otherwise organizing these new communities of faith. Structure is essential to the work of the church. Just as the skeleton gives form to the body, the organizational structure of the church ensures that the church stays true to its mission, that new disciples are well formed in the message of salvation, that the work of the church can continue from generation to generation.
THE WORK OF THE CHURCH
Today’s second reading, from Revelation, and the Gospel reading from John together help us to understand the radical nature of Christ’s message of love. In Revelation, we are told that now the sea, the symbol of the chaos of the past, is no more. The new Jerusalem has come down from heaven and is joined with humanity for all time. Christ dwells within each of us, the baptized, in a radical new way of joining together. Christ is here, now, for all time, within each and every one of us. This is why Jesus’ commandment of love is so very new. We are commanded to love each other as Christ loves, for when we love, we reveal Christ’s presence among us. This is a love beyond any human concept of love, a love without concern for cost, a love that calls us to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, and grant mercy to enemies. This is the love demanded of us by our baptism, the radical love of others as we are loved by God. This love is our work, the work of the church of Christ on earth.

Dear parishioners,
The Lord told His disciples to love one another and so He commands us to do the same. It takes work to love as He does, it's hard for us to see beyond ourselves and the faults and failings of others. And so He gives us the example and the grace to work the wonders of love in our homesand everywhere we may find ourselves. It is what the world needs, it is what we all need.
Please keep in your prayers the family of Jean Martin, from St. Michaels who died last Sunday. May the Lord be their comfort and peace at this time of loss.
Today St. Francis Xavier celebrates the First Holy Communion of six of their children. A wonderful moment for all of us as we see the innocence and beauty of God's goodness in them. May they and their families be blessed with a deep hunger for the Bread of Life, the Lord Jesus.
DON'T FORGET NEXT SUNDAY!! At 2:00 pm we will be assembled for our parishes' Town Hall Meeting at St. Michael's in the multi-purpose room for a pitch-in meal and fellowship as we explore the Connected in the Spirit results and answer questions you may have.

In today’s Gospel we return to the Last Supper to hear Jesus’ new commandment to love one another. Good stewards, as the recipients of God’s unending love, take this commandment seriously. Though we are reminded of his love throughout the year, it is Jesus’ actions and words during the feast of Passover that show us the extent of his love and the way we too can live a life of stewardship: “… love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Can we accept this commandment from Jesus? Are we able to embrace this kind of discipleship? Can we humbly offer ourselves in loving service to one another?
Pope Francis tells us that true power lies not in taking care of own wants, but in humbly taking care of the needs of others.

St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier Sacrament Preparation: The Faith Formation Commission, the Pastor, and the Archdiocese state that a child must be enrolled and attend classes the YEAR BEFORE and YEAR of receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation. Baptism of children under school age requires the parents to meet with the pastor before the sacrament is received.

Classes begin at 9:30am, please be on time. It means to arrive 5-10 minutes early. We need volunteer assistants each Sunday. Thanks to Kim Stamper for her time this past Sunday.
Remember Faith is a gift from God. Faith Formation is a life-long process. If your children have been absent, please contact the catechist to keep up with their current assignments. Easter- The sound of Alleluias’ fills the 50 days of Easter Sunday to Pentecost as we give thanks for the gift of our salvation. The Easter Tridiuum recalls the passion and resurrection of Christ in the sacred journey from Holy Thursday to Easter Vigil, “ Dying he destroyed our death. Rising he restored our life.”

Dear Lord… We thank you for the lives and service of our men and women in the Armed Forces. Strengthen them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s way to protect our nation and way of life. May they face each day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus did: with courage dignity and faith. And if it be Your will when their work is through bring them safely home. Lord please also bless the families of our troops. Reward them generously for their sacrifices which are known only to You. May we never forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety: those who have died in the service of our country. May they rest in peace forever with You in Your kingdom. Amen
