Everything in Art Don’t forget to pay your $20 art fee by
Mrs. Mariotti Shapard 2012-13 THIS FRIDAY, Sept. 7th!
Expectations for the Studio-Classroom Environment
§ This class is designed for beginners and advanced artists. The projects are hands-on, challenging, and FUN.
§ Always work hard and do your best… and then surprise yourself by doing better! Always improve.
§ Be attentive to my instructions and your work (process). Ask for help. Persevere.
§ Be kind to others, respect their artwork, and don’t touch their art.
§ Be on time. Read the school policy on tardies.
§ Eat snacks and use the bathroom during passing time. Water with lid in class is OK.
§ Keep your supplies and table clean. The goal: Leave the room cleaner than you found it. Wait at your table to be excused.
§ Cell phones and other electronic devices must be powered off and out of sight; otherwise they will be given to administration.
Supplies
§ A required art fee of $20 per semester. Receipt due FRI.
§ A recycled, clean, 24 oz or larger plastic container with lid. This will be your water cup for painting. Bring FRIDAY.
Class Goals
1. To exercise your creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
2. To use the “Principles and Elements of Art” as well as learn art-specific vocabulary.
3. To learn about some artists related to our projects.
4. To discover and write about your own artistic process – which include choices you make to express your own ideas.
5. To learn techniques and skills to express your “voice”.
6. To develop and expand on your own personal aesthetic of art (likes and dislikes).
Grades
Process (25%) Points will be earned by completing assigned clean up jobs, meeting deadlines, sketching your ideas, writing reflections on your process, and showing a commitment to learning through your work ethic.
Projects (75%) Your work will not be compared with other students’ art since the class is open to a variety of skill levels. Projects will be individually evaluated using objective rubrics with criteria related to the Goals listed above. The rubrics will always be presented at the beginning of projects so that you will know what is expected.
Rubric Scoring
CHS Scale Letter 16 pt. Rubric Adjusted %
93 – 100 A 16 100
90 – 92 A- 15 91

70 - 72 C - 7 71
65 – 69 D+ 6 68
60 – 64 D 4-5 61-63
0 – 59 F 0 0
Each assignment will be “weighted” by the degree of challenge and time that is needed to complete the work.
Revisions & Extra Credit
Students are required to retain all rubrics, because assignments can be improved to receive a better grade (up to 10 days prior to the last day of the semester). However, some points of a project’s grade, such as those related to the planning and sketching stage cannot be recuperated. To improve a project grade, a student must show me the rubric and the project, and together we will identify what can be done to earn more points. Discuss any revisions or extra credit proposals with me before starting. Extra credit will only be counted in the final grade if all assignments are completed with a total grade of C or better.
Conference Period I will be available every day after school for any student who wants extra help or get caught up with class work after an absence. You will be required to stay for Conference Periods if your grade gets below a 69%. Keep track of your assignments and grade in Skyward. If assigned, you must attend conference period and make transportation arrangements. If you do not attend, you may receive a disciplinary referral (see school policy).
Discipline & Plagiarism
I believe students should manage their behavior and self-correct when needed, but depending on the seriousness, recurrence of a problem, or if a student does not solve the problem on his or her own, a referral will be written. In addition, students are required to submit their own, wholly original artwork. If not, the situation will be treated as an incident of plagiarism. I adhere to school policies as outlined in the CHS Student Handbook.
