Research Project Award Application

Participation in the three-year Democracy, Culture and Catholicism InternationalResearch Project (DCCIRP) sponsored by Loyola University Chicago’s Joan and Bill Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage (CCIH) requires submission and approval of a Research Project Award application.

Award Explanation

Purpose

The purpose of the Research Project Award is to support each member of an interdisciplinary group of 30 international scholars who will conduct research on a topic pertinent to the phenomenon of democratization and culture, with special focus on Catholic responses and responsibilities. The goal of this support is to generate a published volume of high quality, interdisciplinary research.

Award

The value of the Research Project Award over the three-year duration of DCCIRP includes: a $2,000.00

research stipend; all expenses paid for travel, housing, meal, and registration fees directly linked to participation

in a 2011 Regional Colloquium; all expenses paid for travel, housing, meal, and registration fees directly linked to participation in the 2012 Rome Conference; publication of finished research. Please note that any change in the subject matter of the research project should be discussed with the Project Coordinator prior to the change.

Eligibility

Applicants for a Research Project Award may be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or non-U.S. citizens. Normally, applicants must have received the doctoral degree or its equivalent by the start date of the research project. In addition to producing a publishable research paper at the end of DCCIRP’s three years, all applicants must agree to: 1) read and comment on three other DCCIRP research papers over the course of the three-year project, 2) present their own developing research paper at a 2011 Regional Colloquium, 3) present their own finished research paper at the 2012 Rome Conference. Awardees from Loyola University Chicago (LUC) and partnering North American Jesuit universities must also agree to attend the 2010 Chicago Workshop where they will be asked to describe their research projects.

Submission

The application for a Research Project Award must be submitted according to the application guidelines below.

Applications are due by January 19, 2010.

Evaluation

Each application for a Research Project Award will be subject to a blind review and recommended by the CCIH Advisory Board. The criteria for recommendation includes: 1) the intrinsic quality of the research project, 2) evidence that the research can be completed over DCCIRP’s three years, 3) publication potential of the research project, 4) the project’s contribution to DCCIRP’s goal of interdisciplinary research.

Application Guidelines

Application for a Research Project Award must include the following:

B.Research Project Description

As an attachment to the application cover sheet, a 3-4 page description of the research project must

beprovided.This description should succinctly indicate the principal question the research project is

addressing, as well as the project’s objectives, research methodology, anticipated results, and

academic contributions. In addition, each applicant should list the publication outlets in their

discipline to which they would expect to submit their completed research.

C. Compliance Issues

U.S. applicants are reminded that all projects involving human subjectsrequire approval by the

appropriate compliance committee before stipends are awarded and the research can begin. Please

Applicants will berequired to provide a copy of approval notification or protocol number for

approved projects.

As an attachment to the application cover sheet, the current curriculum vitae of the applicant must be

provided.
