Course Description: Biology focuses on the fundamental concepts of the function of the cell, the molecular basis of heredity, the process of biological diversity, the interdependence of organisms, the organization and inclusion of matter and energy in living systems, the behavior of organisms, and the structure and function of the human body. A variety of teaching techniques such as lecture, individual and group activities, extensive lab and hands-on activities, oral and written projects, current events, and exams and quizzes will be used. This course is designed to increase the science processes of observing, measuring, classifying, experimenting, interpreting, communicating, modeling, and inquiry.

**The state of Oklahoma requires students to complete an “End of Instruction” test (EOI) in Biology. The score achieved on the test will be included on the student’s high school transcript and students must pass a number of EOI’s to graduate. Due to the EOI requirements, the class will maintain a rigorous pace.

Late Assignments and Make-up Policy:
All work is due at the time it is to be graded or handed in. Late assignments will not be accepted. If there is an emergency situation, please discuss it with the teacher. Make-up work is the STUDENT’S responsibility. Refer to the Student Handbook for policies regarding make-up work. A zero will be given for any assignment that is not made up in the allowed time. Make up exams will be given the first school day the student returns to class after an absence.
Classroom Management:
All JenksFreshmanAcademy rules and regulations will be supported and enforced. The classroom environment should be conducive to learning, which will be achieved by mutual respect and responsible behavior.
Tardy Policy:
Per district policy, any student not in his or her assigned seat when the tardy bell ceases to ring is considered tardy to class and is required to serve a “Lunch D-hall” within 48 hours of being tardy. D-halls that are not served on time are “doubled.”
Laboratory Safety:
Science can be a dangerous subject if students are careless or simply not informed of the potential hazards in a laboratory. We will discuss lab safety in class then students and parents are required to sign a copy of the Safety Agreement and Contact Lens Agreement (if applicable) before the student will be allowed to participate in any lab activities. All students must wear the appropriate safety equipment (goggles, apron, & NO open toed-shoes) at all times during lab. Horseplay is not tolerated. Noncompliance with lab policy will result in the student sitting out for the rest of the lab and receiving a grade of zero for that lab activity. Students displaying inappropriate behavior will be excluded from lab indefinitely at the discretion of the instructor.
I am looking forward to having you in class this year! Please keep this in your notebook for reference.
