Kathy Beth Kantor Memorial Scholarship

Kathy Beth Kantor was an accomplished and passionate photographer. When cancer claimed her life in May of 2000 at the age of 34, the Kathy Beth Kantor Memorial Scholarship Foundation for Visual Arts/Photography at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts was established in her memory.

The purpose of the scholarships is to broaden the arts education of promising students who will carry forward Kathy’s love and dedication to photography and visual arts.

This scholarship will be awarded on merit to:

One graduating senior and to one junior and one sophomore.

To be considered for this award, students must submit the attached application with a portfolio of at least 10 printed photographs (black & white or color) that embody the theme of InnerStrength and Bravery. Kathy battled cancer for almost two years after being told that she had just months to live. The human spirit is powerful beyond measure. Create a series that personifies what inner strength and bravery mean to you. The deadline for applications is May 12, 2017. The evaluation criteria includes points for quality of expression on the application (25%), quality of photographs, printing, mounting and overall presentation, creativity, growth over time, and artistic potential (75%). A jury of visual artists with expertise in photography will select the top three candidates in each grade who will then be scheduled for interviews. A winner from each grade will be chosen from those interviewed.

Applications are to be submitted to Visual Arts Chair Liz Young. Laurie Kaman will award the scholarships at the Scholarship Recognition Luncheon and she, along with Dr. Kantor and others, will honor the winners and their parents at a recognition dinner that will follow after the end of the school year.

The senior winner will receive a cash award, which will be given directly to the college he/she will be attending. The 10th and 11th graders will receive gift certificates to a camera supply store. The funds may be used for equipment, supplies, special classes, and other photography-related purposes.
