Student Dress Code2015-2016
The purpose of the DSSTStapleton MS dress code is to create a professional, safe, and respectful community where students can place their sole focus on learning. The dress code is in effect from the time students are in the building until they exit at the end of the school day.As students enter the building, they must adjust their clothing to meet dress code expectations.
Tops
- Students must wear the DSST STP MS polo shirt at all times.
- Solid black, grey, red or white T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, or turtlenecks under the Polo are allowed.
- Students may wearDSST outerwear (i.e. DSST sweatshirt, ¼ to full zip up sweatshirt) over the DSST polo shirt but not in place of the collared shirt.The DSST polo collar must be visible.
- All tops may not be excessively baggy or revealing and must be tucked into bottoms.
- Coats, jackets, hoodies and other outerwear not a part of the DSST uniform must be placed in lockers when students are dismissed to advisory.
Bottoms
- Pants/skirts must be solid black, grey, or khaki in color.
- Pants that are baggy, worn low, too tight, have holes or include designs will not be permitted.
- Students must wear pants that are mid-calf or longeror skirts that naturally hang at the knee or longer (including uneven edged skirts). Pulling skirts lower temporarily does not count.
- Leggings/tightsmay be worn under skirts but they must be solid black, white, grey or khaki. Leggings/tights, including those with pockets, cannot be worn in place of skirts or with shorts.
- Baggy pants, spandex, stretchy denim,and shorts are not permitted, even on dress down or spirit days.
Footwear
- All parts of shoes must be black, brown, or grey, including laces, logos, and soles.
- Shoes need to be sturdy and safe for lab participation.
- Sandals, open toed shoes, skater shoes, slippers or slipper like shoes, sling backs, CROCS, high heels (higher than 1 inch) or platform shoes are not allowed.
- Both socks must match and may not be worn over pants.
P.E. Dress Code
- Students must wear a DSST T-shirt or sweatshirt.
- Sweatpants or appropriate length shorts, and tennis shoes that are not DSST may be worn.
- Students may not wear jeans, dress pants, dress shoes, or polo shirts.
College Gear or Spirit Wear Days (Fridays)
- On Fridays, students may wear DSST Spirit Wear or College Gear in place of their DSST Polo.
- Students must continue to be in their regular uniform bottoms and footwear, unless they have on DSST Spirit Wear sweatpants. Athletic footwear is only permitted if they have both a DSST or College Gear Spirit Wear top and bottom.
- Jeans, pajama wear, Non-DSST/College Gear sweatpants are not permitted on Spirit Wear Days.
Dress Down Days (Wednesdays and Fridays)
- Students who earn a core value/effort award will earn a certificate and dress down day. These opportunities are also given to whole school, grade level, and advisories throughout the year.
- Students may wear DSST Spirit Wear, jeans/skirts, t-shirts, tennis shoes, and/or sneakers.
- Students may not wear: shorts, hats, hoods on heads, pajama wear, skirts that do not meet the length requirement (at the knee or below it), leggings as pants, sandals, slippers, spaghetti straps, shirts with bra straps showing, sleeveless tops,revealing clothing, baggy clothing,non-DSST sweatpants, distressed or clothes with holes in them.
- Coats, jackets, hoodies and other outerwear may not be worn on dress down days.
- Clothing or accessories that promote violence, alcohol, gangs, tobacco, drugs or sexual innuendos, explicit or implicit, are not permitted.
- All additional dress code expectations under ‘Electronics’ and ‘Accessories and Additional Guidelines’ still apply.
Accessoriesand Additional Guidelines
- Earrings are acceptable but worn in ears ONLY. No other visible piercings are permitted.
- Jewelry must not contain text or visuals that promote violence, alcohol, gangs, tobacco, drugs or sexual innuendos, explicit or implicit.
- Hats, hoods, combs, bandanas, any bandana design accessories, do-rags, and sunglasses are not allowed to be worn in school, including common areas.
- Clothing, jewelry, or appearances that are determined to be distractive to the learning environment will not be permitted.
Electronics
- No electronic devices may be used or visible (including those that may be seen in pockets) until the school day is over. All electronic devices will be confiscated, parents will be notified, and will be at the front office until a parent/guardian can retrieve the electronic device.
- Students must store turned off devices in locked lockers and cannot be taken out until the school day is over. Families assume all responsibility and liability for electronic devices.
- Teachers may allow students to use headphones with laptops or e-readers in class for instructional purposes only.
The faculty and staff of DSST reserve the sole right to interpret and enforce the student dress code. Students who violate the dress code will be given a refocus and required to take off the item and/or change into and wear a school uniform for the day. Any uniforms that are lent to students must be laundered and returned in two days. When uniforms are not available students will have to call home for appropriate clothing to be brought to school for them, or students may be sent home. Students will not attend class until they are in dress code for the day. Repeat dress code violations may result in further disciplinary consequences.
