Workshop

(ZMO)
Kirchweg 33, 14129 Berlin
May 23th - 25th 2002
Conveners:
Margret Frenz,
Heike Liebau,
Joachim Oesterheld
The workshop investigates the interde-pendence of education and social change in the process of nation-building in South Asia and tries to find an answer to the question under which circumstances edu-cation promotes or prevents social change in heterogenous societies. As education is perceived as a means to transport ideas, concepts and knowledge and to embed them in the future generations, political, religious and cultural forces respectively strife for a strong position in the educa-tional sector in order to shape society ac-cording to their aims. The presentations deal with different themes related to the-ory, history, sociology and politics of edu-cation covering various regions of Asia and including historical case studies as well as research on present day educational pro-jects.
