SUMMARY OF MAIN FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE OF THE JOB
In accordance with the Vision, Mission, Values, and in collaboration with the health care team, the Senior Physiotherapist will work to deliver world class child and family centred care to NMCH patients.
The vision for the therapy department is that Physiotherapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Therapy will be housed and function as one department at NMCH. From a philosophical point of view all three disciplines (PT, OT & ST) work holistically with the child with acute medical and surgical needs. The three disciplines all have many areas of practice that overlap and intersect which allows for joint goal setting, prioritisation of intervention and improved patient outcomes. When a multidisciplinary framework is adopted the paediatric patient is viewed from a more holistic, comprehensive, developmentally appropriate point of view.
The therapy department will be run according to standard “working day” hospital requirements (for example: 07h30 – 16h00) daily. The PT staff will eventually provide a weekend service, as well as a 24 hour on call to the ICUs and high care wards (1 PT on call).
As the majority of the patients admitted will be acutely ill the main role of PT is envisaged to be chest physio in the NICU, PICU and wards along with early mobilization of post-operative patients to prevent respiratory complications. Early rehabilitation will be given to patients who are stable and awaiting discharge.
Evidence points to a growing role for physiotherapy in the management of children with cancer as well as those on dialysis and post-transplant. A comprehensive physiotherapy service will be provided to these units both as in-patients and out-patients.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
As this is a specialist hospital newly qualified therapists will not be recruited. Applicants should have a minimum of five years of clinical experience in the management of paediatrics; and preferably a paediatric specific Master’s degree. Additionally evidence of postgraduate paediatric courses will be required.
Registration with HPCSA as a PT.
