Academic Advisor II

Purpose

Purpose:

Advise undergraduate students concerning their degree plans and course work for obtaining a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biological Chemistry. Prepare degree plans and verify graduation requirements. Monitor freshman retention, student success rates and 6 yr graduation rates. Graduate program correspondence.

Essential Functions

Function 1:

Advise students in person, over the phone, and by correspondence concerning their degree plans and course work for obtaining a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biological Chemistry. Prepare degree plans and verify graduation requirements. Create, organize and maintain undergraduate advising and degree plan files.

50 % Time

Function 2:

Attend on-campus advising workshops and meetings in order to stay current on changing policy and procedures.

10 % Time

Function 3:

Administer placement exams for incoming students in order to determine appropriate class placement. Monitor freshman retention, student success rates, and 6-year graduation rates.

20 % Time

Function 4:

Graduate program coordinator and correspondent - monitor graduate program emails, inquiries and applications. Prepare information for Graduate Recruiting Committee. Maintain files on all incoming graduate applicants. Correspond with Graduate School to ensure exceptions are requested in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience advising college and/or high school students. Applicants must include in their online resume the following information: 1) Employment history: name of company, period employed (from month/year to month/year), job title, summary of job duties and 2) Education: If some college or college degree, list school name, degree type, major, graduated or not, and hours completed if not graduated.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Biochemistry or Chemistry. Must accurately evaluate and articulate information on students to faculty and administrators and accurately interpret institutional rules, policies, and regulations and other information. Tact will be required along with diplomacy and judgment in dealing with students, faculty and administrators.
