Agenda October 6

Flagstaff Unified School District

ITQ Strengthening Instructional Leadership in Mathematics

Goal 1: Examine the research-affirmed foundation of the content and process standards to deepen understanding of the AZCCRS

Goal 2: Examine the instructional shifts necessary to implement instructional shift necessary to implement the AZCCRS in mathematics

Goal 3 : Examine evidence-based best practices for effective observation, coaching and evaluation of AZCCRS in mathematics

Goal 4: Examine effective practices to develop an understanding of the AZCCRS in mathematics for the parent/guardians, community members ad other stakeholders

Outcomes

·  Participants will understand why “rules” for procedural mathematics do not lead to conceptual understanding, focus on multiple representations

·  Participants will create materials for communicating new terminology with parents and administrators about AZCCRS-M

·  Participants will plan a grade/course level curriculum meeting

Jeff Hovermill / In our session(s) together, we will closely examine what that looks like within and across grade levels and grade bands. This month will utilize the key mathematical concept of variability as an avenue to rigorously focus on mathematical understanding and how it coherently builds throughout the standards. Participants will leave with a greater facility to understand and articulate the progression of the mathematical concept of variability and when, why, and how to further develop the understanding of their students and colleagues. (continued for Aug 18 session) / PPT and handouts
