Job Postings from Small Wisconsin General Practice Firms
In the last two weeks, five small Wisconsin general practice firms have submitted job postings to us. All of them are interested in hiring a May 2010 graduate to join the firm as a new associate. Please be sure to check the Job Bank on Symplicity on a weekly basis so that you don't miss any of these opportunities.
In addition, two other Madison postings came in this week that may be of interest to some 3Ls: A Staff Attorney/Director of Training position with the Wisconsin Realtors Association; and an Executive Policy and Budget Analyst position with the State Department of Administration, which has hired our graduates for similar positions in the past. Both are in the Job Bank on Symplicity.
Reminder: 1Ls and 2Ls - Great Lakes Indian Law Center Clerkship Applications Due February 1, 2010
From Professor Richard Monette: The Great Lakes Indian Law Center is accepting applications from 1Ls and 2Ls for clerkships for Summer 2010. Approximately 10 - 12 students will be placed with Indian tribes in Wisconsin for summer clerkships with judges, legislative offices, and executive branch agencies. No coursework or background is needed in Federal Indian Law, though it helps to have established an interest and knowledge in Federal Indian Law matters.
Indian nations are sovereign entities that have their own unique constitutions and laws but also have to deal with everyday legal matters such as contracts, real estate, environmental law, employment law, family law, health and human services, criminal law, etc. In addition there is the unique interaction of a nation with State and Federal law and agencies.
The clerkships pay a stipend of at least $2400 for the summer. As well, we ask the various tribes to match that amount, and generally, although not always, they do. We will know if they intend to match before applicant selection. If interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to the attention of Professor Richard Monette, Director, Great Lakes Indian Law Center. Please place hard copies of the cover letter and resume in my personal mailbox on the 5th floor. The submission deadline is February 1, 2010.
Applications for Summer Public Service Fellowships Now Available in the Career Services Office!
Applications for Summer Public Service Fellowships (SPSF) are now available in hard copy in the Career Services Office, and online at SPSFs provide funding for students who work a minimum of 10 weeks/400 hours in unpaid or low paid summer public interest/public service jobs. There are two deadlines associated with the 2010 SPSF application. The first deadline, Friday, March 12, is for the submission of financial aid paperwork, including your 2010-2011 FAFSA and a copy of your 2009 federal income tax return. The second deadline, Thursday, April 8, is for the submission of the SPSF application itself. You do not need to have obtained a qualifying public interest position by the first deadline; you do need to have obtained such a position by the second deadline (although certain exceptions apply; please see the SPSF application for details).
When you pick up the SPSF application, you must also pick up the accompanying green Fact Sheet, which contains very important information about the application process. In addition, you must pick up the accompanying white Student Federal Tax Return Cover Form (which must be submitted with your 2009 federal income tax return by the March 12 deadline).
If you have any questions about the SPSF, please contact Kristin Davis at .
Workshops to Prepare 2Ls for Summer Jobs
If you are a 2L who will be working as a law clerk this summer, you will be interested to know that we have arranged for you to get some excellent advice and tips to help you put your best foot forward in your summer job. On Wednesday, February 10, and Wednesday, February 24, at 4:00 in Room 2260, several lawyers from local firms (Foley & Lardner, Godfrey & Kahn, and Reinhart Boerner) will be offering advice and recommendations to 2Ls on how to have a successful summer clerkship. The first workshop on Feb. 10 will focus on general advice about how to make a great impression as a summer employee; the second workshop on Feb. 24 will focus on making sure your written work product is up-to-par. All 2Ls are invited to attend the two workshops.
In addition, up to 24 second-year students will be offered the opportunity to participate in a "writing project" as well. Those 24 students will be given a writing assignment that will require them to read a few cases/regulations and draft a legal memo of five to ten pages in length that will be due in mid-March, and will receive one-on-one feedback about that memo from one of the participating lawyers. We are looking into the possibility of offering one law school academic credit to students who complete the writing project portion of the program. If you think you might want to participate in the writing project/writing feedback portion of the program, please contact Asst. Dean Jane Heymann at as soon as possible.
Legal Internship in Vietnam
YKVN Lawyers, a widely respected Vietnamese law firm formerly the affiliate of White and Case in Vietnam , is recruiting summer 2010 interns for both their Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices. There are also possibilities for fall 2010 semester interns.
The East Asian Legal Studies Center assists YKVN by collecting applications and interviewing applicants. Final decisions are made by YKVN Lawyers. Information about and assistance with housing, visas, and work assignments are given through YKVN Lawyers. The Center will provide a stipend to defray some of the costs of the internship, such as the intnernational flight.
Candidates should have a basic familiarity and interest in contracts, finance, corporate law. No Vietnamese language skills required.
Interns gain international legal experience, experience first hand the second fastest growing economy in Asia , and work in areas such as contract litigation, securities, corporate and finance law, and international investment. The internships provide the potential opportunity to do international legal work for important Fortune 100 clients and to review documents as an English proof-reader, as well as the ability to live in a quickly developing country in Asia and an unusual addition to your resume, which previous interns say is a good 'talking point' during job interviews.
Summers in Vietnam are hot and applicants should familiarize themselves with the climate so they know what to expect.
There were 4 JD students who went on the internship last summer. If you want to contact one of the previous students for more information, write to the Center's Associate Director, Susan Katcher, , and ask for the contact information.
