Identifying Fragrance Wheel Families - 2014

We often have problems knowing which FM fragrance to suggest to a customer and with 150 fragrances in our range, anyone can end up confused. This booklet Identifying Fragrance Families, and its companion Selecting FM Perfumes, are aimed at helping with those suggestions.

Now colours can be specified by percentages of only 3 colours and there are colour wheels to make it easier to choose colours. A small change in the percentages of a colour will move it round the wheel to the next sector.

Perfumes have hundreds of possible ingredients and billions of different combinations, but we also have a Fragrance Wheel to show the relationship between fragrances. Again just a small change to the fragrance will move it round the wheel into the next sector

The Fragrance Wheel, first devised by Michael Edwards in 1983, is used by industry professionals to advise their customers what perfumes might be suitable for them.

It is a classification standard for perfumes which splits the range into families and subgroups and can be used to identify alternative fragrances that might suit the customers requirements.

Michael Edwards team of independent experts evaluates each new perfume and assigns it a Fragrance Wheel classification based on its fragrance. Thus the perfumes in one particular group will smell similar, otherwise they would be in different groups.

Perfume Consultant buy a copy of the ‘Perfume Bible’ which has been updated every year for the last 27 years. They are recommended to hi-light the perfumes they sell in the ‘bible’ and use the ‘bible’ to identify their customers’ favourite fragrance family. http://www.fragrancesoftheworld.com

They ask their clients for 3 or 4 fragrances they most enjoy wearing, look them up in ‘the bible’ to identify their Fragrance Wheel families and recommend 3 fragrances they sell that are from the same family and subgroup.

They are not selling copy-cat perfumes and neither are we.

They are recommending fragrances that their (and Michael Edwards’) knowledge and experience suggests their clients would like.

And so are we.

This booklet will help you identify a customer’s favourite fragrance families and offer them fragrances from the Federico Mahora Collection that they will love.

So how does it work

If the customer knows the fragrance wheel classifications, Step 1 can be ignored, but be beware, many customers know the names of the Classical Families which are not the same as the Fragrance Wheel Families.

Step 1 Identifying Favourite Fragrance Families

Ask the customer for the name of some of their favourite fragrances and check the list in this booklet to see if we can identify their favourite Fragrance Wheel Family Group.

Step 2 Selecting FM Perfumes

Look in the Selecting Perfumes booklet for an FM fragrance in the same family group. Adjacent families and groups can be possible alternatives.

Step 3

Now select 3 of those FM fragrances to give to the customer to try. I give them a sample card for each sample, with the name, family, description and price.

Notes

1.  All our fragrances are originals, created by Drom, one of the world’s top perfume oil manufacturers and bottled and packaged by Perfand for the FM Group

  1. The Classical Fragrance Family Groups, as shown in the back of the Perfumes catalogue are not the same as the fragrance wheel family groups. Do not try to mix the groups.
  2. Different ‘perfume authorities’ often have different ideas about which fragrance should be in which group. The lists here are not claimed to be definitive, and should be used as a guide only. The ultimate judge must be the customer, so ask them to try your samples and decide for themselves.
  3. Select the name of the perfume in the left column and the 4 right columns will show the NEARest FM Perfume to that group, the next closest LOWer on the wheel, towards the water end of the wheel, the next closest HIGHer on the wheel, towards the wood end of the wheel, and the NUMBER of FM perfumes in that group.

5.  The X numbers are perfumes that are not in the current catalogue and are "while stocks last items"
