Nations and Regions – Examples of World Sport Day activity
East Midlands: The Holt Primary School in Lincolnshire will be holding an opening ceremony with each class creating a flag that represents their chosen Value and a country selected from those competing. Each class will perform their own national anthem they have composed and feed facts to the other students about their chosen country.
East of England: Pupils at Monks Eleigh CEVC Primary School in Suffolk will walk through the village with a flame made by the children, inviting parents and the local community to join in. They are then hosting an opening ceremony where children carry flags and perform the Mascot Dance. They will decorate the school and field with flags for the occasion.
London: Brunel University are holding an event for local schools. This is where Korea will be training pre-Games, so World Sport Day will be themed around Korea – including a big flag moment.
North East: Fellside Community Primary School in Gateshead are holding an opening ceremony which will include a Dance Festival performance, and a performance from a Chinese dance group. They are also running Carousel of Olympic activities on the field, run by Year 6, with space in the timetable for every class to participate. On top of this, lessons for the day will be based around culture of China, from geography and food to sport.
North West: Blackrod Primary School in Bolton will be celebrating World Sport Day by holding a Best of British Ceremony. The children will learn songs such as the National Anthem, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem. They will also have fun celebrating dance from around the world – Bhangra, Bollywood, Zumba and the Mascot Dance.
South East: Cleves School in Surrey will stage an opening ceremony at the local community Rugby Club, with other schools involved. This will begin with a torch relay, and schools will design their own Olympic flag which will be paraded around the venue.
South West: Lufton College (Mencap national college) are holding a sports day for students from Lufton, Five Ways School and Yeovil college Life skills department. The day will start with an opening ceremony, followed by a number of sport activities. The six teams will be named after the teams from around the world whom the three establishments have chosen to support.
West Midlands: St Thomas of Canterbury school in Walsall are holding an Olympic-themed sports day where the children will all be allocated different continents from which they will pick Olympic teams. The children will be designing their own mascots, flags, Olympic kits as well as banners which will all be showcased on the big day. The children will be carrying out their own opening ceremony where each continent will perform a dance from that particular area, as well as national anthems.
Yorkshire and the Humber: At St Mary’s RCVA School in East Riding of Yorkshire, each class will be looking at a different competing country, researching the athletes and choosing their favourite Olympic sport to research and try out. They will then use the flags from each class to make a giant display. They will also recreate an opening ceremony in each class.
Scotland: Staff at Calderglen High School in South Lanarkshire are working with group of students, some of whom have been promoting the Olympics in South Africa, to plan a full school event to link with Mount View High School in South Africa.
Wales: Ysgol Dinas Bran in Denbighshire hope to host an opening ceremony with flags and an opening speech by athlete Daniel Caines, followed by a multi-event sport competition. Each form will represent a country and each pupil will wear a coloured t-shirt to represent that country. They will also have a podium, medals and a closing ceremony.
