“Mad for Fads”

(1) What is a fad? How do you think fads get started?

(2) There are many types of fads? Fashions, games and toys, activities, hairstyles, and entertainment fads (TV shows, for example). List some fads popular with Sandy Run students in the last few years...

(3) What fads were popular when your parents were in school? Your grandparents?

(4) BEFORE reading – Preview the article, “Mad for Fads.” What can you expect to learn in this article? (Mention at least 3 things.)

(5) DURING reading – as you read CIRCLE each of the fads mentioned. UNDERLINE main ideas. (Pay close attention to the first sentence in each paragraph.) List 3 fads you never heard of...

(6) AFTER reading – Go back and read through the article again and this time take CORNELL NOTES on lined paper. Cornell notes are a form of block (L-I-S-P) notetaking. Your teacher will give you a special guide to get you started.

(7) Write a short essay based on this article (final version must be typed – FCS) that answers these questions...

(8) With partners, create a PowerPoint slide show (max 6 slides) on fads in a particular decade. You will be assigned one of these time periods...

Requirements –

□  INTRO to the decade slide that features the decade in fancy lettering and 3-5 pictures with captions of important historical events and famous people associated with the decade

□  One slide per fad (3-4) – describe the fad and include a picture.

□  A bibliography slide on which you list your names and sources of information. Use www.noodletool.com or www.easybib.com to properly format your sources.
