Course Description:

The Mathematics Course is a yearlong class. This course strives to teach all students the necessary skills to solve problems, with the intent to understand and apply the uses of Mathematics in the world. Instructional time focuses on five critical units of study, in which students will apply the eight Mathematical Practices to solve a variety of problems.

Math 180 is an intervention program designed to address the needs of struggling students in math. Math 180 focuses on deep understanding and mastery of essential math skills that are required for academic success.

Textbook:

Glencoe Math Common Core Edition Course 1

AMSTI CP3

Units of Study:

  • Ratios and Proportional Relationships
  • Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems
  • The Number System
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.
  • Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
  • Expressions and Equations
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
  • Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
  • Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
  • Geometry
  • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
  • Statistics and Probability
  • Develop understanding of statistical variability.
  • Summarize and describe distributions.

Mathematical Practices

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Required Materials:

  • Textbook
  • 3 ring pocket folder or binder
  • Composition notebook (2)
  • Pencils
  • Colored pencils
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Hand-held pencil sharpener

Grading Scale:

100% - 90% = A

89% - 80% = B

79% - 70% = C

69% - 60% = D

59% & Below = F

Grade Weighting for Mathematics:

Each nine weeks there will be tests, quizzes (announced and unannounced), bell ringers, classwork, projects, and homework assignments. There will also be other types of assessments, such as Global Scholar and Achievement Series, to periodically check forunderstanding. Global Scholar and Achievement Series are district wide assessments. Global Scholar will be administered three times during the school year. Achievement Series will be administered twice each nine weeks as a pre-assessment and post-assessment. Your child’s math grade will be broken down as follows:

  • Test 45%
  • Classwork 30%
  • Project/Notebook15%
  • Quiz5%
  • Homework5%

Policies & Procedures:

Absences:Excessive absences should be avoided. In the event of an absence, the student is required to make up class work assignments. Any homework or projects assigned prior to absences are due when students return to class. Upon returning, students are responsible for checking to see what was missed.

Extra Credit: Extra Credit is NOT offered. Please do not ask for extra credit. Students are encouraged to work hard on all assignments the first time to prevent the need for extra credit.

Grades: Grades are always accessible on INow. Every effort will be made to keep grades up to date. Please keep in mind, however, larger assignments will take longer to grade.

Homework: Homework is meant to reinforce skills taught in class. Homework assignments are always posted on the board. Students should write all assignments on their homework assignments sheet. Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. The average assignment should take anywhere from 10-15 minutes to complete, and will be due the following day.

Late Work: It is very important to get work completed on time. Having a busy schedule filled with sports and other extracurricular activities is not an excuse not to get assignments done. Late work may be accepted, with the exception of daily homework assignments. Any late work will receive reduced credit.

Preparedness: Students are expected to come to class prepared every day with their homework, interactive composition notebook, pocket folder, textbook and several sharpened pencils. Bringing these items daily, completing all assignments, and a willingness to learn and participate is crucial for success.

Textbook: The Glencoe Textbook is online. Students will have access to the website, once they have set up an account. The website can be used for additional help and resources. Online students will have access to tutorials that provide step-by-step instructions to all concepts taught during this course. Also, students will be required to submit assignments online through the website.

Management Policy:

Classroom Rules

  1. Be respectful.
  2. Enter and exit the classroom quietly.
  3. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak or leave your seat.
  4. Follow directions the first time they are given.
  5. Bring all materials and supplies to class daily.

Consequences

1. Verbal Warning

2. Contact Parents
