Course Description:

This course is a study of the major personality theories, including those proposed by Freud and his followers, learning theorists, trait theorists, social-learning theorists and humanists with regard to their philosophical assumptions, theoretical concepts and their clinical implications in work with individuals, couples and families. Students will review various theoretical models and the historical context in which they were developed. This course has a substantial writing requirement. 47 contact hours.

Major Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe major and emerging theories of personality by achieving passing scores on criterion referenced tests.
  2. Explain personality theories as they relate to assessment methods through classroom discourse and performance on criterion referenced tests.
  3. Conduct archival research on a major theory and present findings to peers in the classroom setting.
  4. Describe the differences between major theoretical approaches to personality in classroom discourse, performance on criterion referenced tests and in the personality self-assessment.
  5. Engage in a critical discourse with peers about the difficulties encountered in assessment of subjective aspects of human behavior.
  6. Demonstrate research skills by writing a personality self-assessment in APA style and format.
  7. Apply assessment methods to the analysis of one's own personality.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the student will demonstrate each of the stated course objectives in the following performance terms by:

  1. Engaging in a comprehensive review of major theories, research methods, and assessment instruments used in personality psychology.
  2. Understanding reliability, validity and standardization, practicality and cross-cultural fairness in psychological assessment.
  3. Strengthened skills in self-assessment, archival research writing, and reporting using APA style.
  4. Strengthened skills in critical thinking regarding assessment of subjective areas of human psychology.
  5. Actively supporting a learning environment where diverse issues can be discussed thoroughly and where all views can be expressed freely.

Prerequisites Applicable:

PSY 1012- General Psychology

Please, familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures and evacuation routes located in the buildings you use frequently. Located in each classroom is an Emergency Response Guide (flip-chart) that contains information for proper actions in response to emergencies. You should be prepared to assess situations quickly and use good judgment in determining a course of action. You should evacuate to assembly areas in an orderly manner when an alarm sounds or when directed to do so by college faculty or staff or emergency personnel. Attendance Policy: Attendance is an essential part of the learning experience and is expected in this class. It is expected that students will notify the instructor if the class is going to be missed as a matter of courtesy. Without regular attendance, it is unlikely a student will be able to pass this class.

The instructor will record student attendance during each scheduled class. Because this class meets two (2) times per week, you may accrue up to four (4) unexcused absences before exceeding the maximum number of absences allowed. If you exceed the number of allowed absences, you need to speak with the instructor to determine an academic plan for successful completion of the course.

Attendance is also a part of your grade=50pts. After the initial 2 weeks of class, any class missed will equal to 2pts being deducted for each day, unless there is documentation provided.

Ifyou do not consult with the instructor, you will need to withdraw from the course before the designated deadline in the term to receive a grade of “W.” Ifthe withdrawal occurs after the deadline in the term, you will receive a grade of a “WF.” If you are in your third attempt at completing a course, you will be given a grade of “WF” at any point that you attempt to withdraw, or at any point that you violate the attendance policy.

Excused absences that have been communicated with the instructor and documented accordingly will not count against you. Frequent communication with the instructor is highly recommended!

Students are expected to be present for all exams. There are NO makeup exams.

Late Work:

Late work will be accepted 1 class period late with 50% credit; 0% credit after that.

If illness or other emergencies prevent you from attending class, please notify the instructor immediately and make arrangements to get class notes. Students are responsible for all materials covered in class.

Course Etiquette & Respect:

Students are expected to respect diverse opinions during class discussions, some of which may center on sensitive topics. Though exploration of those sensitive and controversial issues is welcomed, students must demonstrate personal respect for all others in the classroom. Rude, crude, or disrespectful behavior/remarks will not be tolerated and may result in class withdrawal.

If at any time the course material (discussion, movie…)hits a personal nerve, feel free to leave the class, but know you will be responsible for any material missed

Students are expected to complete exams and assignments independently. Cheating may result in failure of the course.

Assignments:

This course requires that you write a minimum of 2,000 words. This requirement will be accomplished through the following assignments:

1.CharacterPapers (2)

a)Expectation: You willperform a psychological analysis of a character from the book“Once and Future Lovers,” by Sheree L. Greer,(Amazon.com). You will select one specific current theoretical perspective to interpret the character you have selected as well as a formal analysis of the character selected. The analysis should be done using multiple pieces of information and situations about the individual and be based on the theoretical perspective you selected. The analysis may includetraits, dispositions, goals, cultural context and emotional/cognitive processes of the character as mentioned in the course text. Lastly, conclude the paper with your own impression of the character.Each paper should include: a description of the main character / a description of the main character from a theoretical perspective/ a summary, in your opinion, about how well the theory describes the person in question.***you are allowed to make personality/ development assumptions***

IMPORTANT!!! Essays shorter than 3 pages or longer than 4 pages will be returned ungraded

b)Points will also be deducted if papers do not conform to the standards set forth below.The paper is expected to be in APA format. a) give your paper a professional-sounding title (no more than 12 words), b) indicate your name, and c) indicate your class (i.e., Personality Development) and d) indicate my name. This information must also be double-spaced; begin about halfway down the page. Your paper must be typed, double spaced, and in essay form. Margins should be no greater than one inch on all sides and only a 12-point font size may be used. Papers must be at least 3 pages in length (not counting the coversheet or reference page), but may not exceed 4 pages. You must use complete sentences and developed paragraphs. You must also include page numbers. Include these page numbers only on the upper right-hand corner of each page. Reference page:You are expected to utilize at least four (4) references: your class text book, one psychological journal and the Greer book. All papers MUST be stapled. I do not accept papers that are paper-clipped, nor do I accept e-mailed papers.

2. Personality Project:

a)Movie Presentation: You have been randomly assigned to a group of five (5) and have been assigned a group movie. The group will perform a psychological analysis of the characters from the movie assigned.The group will select one specific current theoretical perspective to interpret all the characters and one personality perspective for their specific individual character. The presentation should begin with a brief verbal class performance (acting demonstration w/ all members) displaying the nature of the characters, followed by an individual team member formal analysis of the character he or she has demonstrated. On the day of your presentation every group will have 15 minutes to present their information. The presentation should include multimedia components to illustrate the ideas in the presentation.

b)Source Page: You are expected to turn in a Reference page with all the sources, (minimum of four (4)), you utilized for your character in the groups movie presentation in APA format

c)Peer Collaboration: You will be graded on a scale of 1(neg) to 4 (pos)by the peers in your group on your ability to work as a team and be assessable.

3. Handouts: You will be given 6 course handouts that correspond with videos in class. (4 worth 15pts and 2 worth 25pts)

4. Exams: You will take four (4) exams.

***Note: Students will need to supply their own scantron for the 4 exams***
