September/October 2009 Newsletter

Welcome All,

Hope that you’ve all been keeping well since the last newsletter and that this one finds you well.

It’s fast approaching finer weather and there is a noticeable stretch in the evenings which also means the changing of the clocks is soon upon us. Don’t forget to put your clocks forward an hour this weekend (26th)

We’re all gearing up for the National Feis being hosted by the Wellington Irish Society this labour weekend. The venue for the Feis will be at both the Irish Clubrooms in Fifeshire Avenue and also at Wellington Boy’s college. In what promises to be a great Feis, we’d love to see everyone make an appearance over the weekend to either the club or out to the college to watch the sports program. We’re hoping to have Men’s and Women’s Football as well as Hurling this year and are expecting a record number of teams.

Wellington Hutt Valley GAA are also running a fantastic draw for the opportunity to win Return Tickets to Ireland and the final draw will take place over labour weekend. More details on this inside.

We’re looking for volunteers over the weekend to man the bar and to help out with the multitude of tasks over the course of the festival. If you’re free that weekend, give us a shout if you’d consider helping out.

As usual, the club is open on Friday and Sunday evenings and we’d love to see more of the members pay a visit to the club. With the stretch in the evenings, why don’t you call in for a chat and a cup of tea and meet up with some old acquaintances.

And of course, don’t forget the monthly first Friday afternoon teas at the club hosted by Colleen O’Donovan. The next one is on Friday 2nd October; it would be great to see you all there.

Friday Nights at the Club

If you’re partial to some really good harp and traditional music, then call down to the Club on Friday nights from 7.30. We have a group of musicians visiting us regularly and it would be a shame not to support them. Call in for a night of good music and plenty of fun. We’ve been getting a good few down at the club on Friday evenings so if you’ve got an hour or two to spare, feel free to drop in for a tune or even a game of pool with the usual suspects.

Family Night – Irish Club 6pm 26th September (Sat)

Our next family night is on the 26th of September at the club. We’d love to see all of those children and adults who will be taking part in this year’s FEIS there on the night. We hope to use this night to help with the planning of the FEIS weekend and to make sure everything runs smoothly on the weekend itself.

If those attending could please bring a plate, we’ll be dining at 6.30pm with a discussion about the FEIS itself starting around 7.15pm.

Irish Soda Bread (Danny Ford Version)

You’ll have noticed that we’re going with another recipe for Soda bread again this month. We’ve managed to get our hands on Danny Ford’s special recipe so we couldn’t keep it just for ourselves!

Ingredients

Print Recipe Share Recipe Conver12 oz whole meal flour

4 oz white self raising flour
1 level teaspoon baking soda
½ level teaspoon salt / 2 teaspoons sugar
1 tablespoon cooking oil
½ pint butter milk
½ cup fresh milk

Method

Sieve white floor, baking soda, sugar and salt. Mix with whole meal flour, add oil and both milks and knead well. Do not have mixture too wet.

Flatten dough into a circle, make a cross on it with a knife and bake in a hot oven for approximately 30 minutes.

PS you can modify this recipe to make an Irish Tea Cake by adding 2 eggs and raisins or both as desired with a little less milk and buttermilk.

Match V Auckland

On the 5th September, the Wellington senior men’s squad traveled to Auckland to play them in a challenge game as part of our preparations for the state games. In what was a very useful run out, Auckland emerged victorious on a 2-13 to 0-11 score line.

Feis Games

The Feis games are being held at WellingtonBoysCollege over labour weekend and the GAA club will be running the football and hurling events over the weekend. It promises to be one of the biggest Gaelic games events at the national Feis in a number of years.

Social Sevens Tournament

The club will also be running its now annual social pre Christmas mixed tournament from the start of November through to mid December. As usual we’re very keen to get as many new players as possible playing the game, so if you know of anyone wanting to learn a bit of Gaelic football and to enjoy a good social game have a look at for more details.

All Ireland Finals at the club

On the 1st and 3rd weekends of September there was a great turnout at the club to watch Kilkenny complete their 4 in a row with a tight fought win over Tipperary and also to watch Kerry win their 36th title at the expense of Munster champions Cork.

We’ll have more on our trip to Melbourne in the next newsletter and hopefully it’ll have been a very successful one.
