Spanish 1 Syllabus

Boswell High School

Course Description

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language. It is taught through the skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students will learn to understand the Spanish language as it is spoken at a basic level and to communicate with simple verbal and written responses. Spanish sounds will be learned through imitation. Basic grammar and sentence structure will be taught in basic, everyday vocabulary. Basic cultural themes of the Spanish-speaking world will be introduced and interspersed through the course.

Goals:

*Introduction to listening, reading, speaking, and writing in Spanish.

*Understand the cultural and historical framework of the Spanish-speaking community.

Materials:

The following materials should be brought to class each day:

*Writing paper

*Pencils and/or pens (blue or black ink only, please!)

*One dry erase marker. Students will use these on the mini white boards for practice and review.(Not daily)

* A Textbook “En Español” may be checked out at any time. (I will have a class set available)

*I also recommend that you buy an English-Spanish/Spanish-English dictionary for your use throughout this course and throughout your life as a speaker of Spanish!

ClassRules: The Expected Behaviors

8. A teacher pass and permission is required any time you need to step out of the classroom.

*Each student is responsible for his/her own learning. All work should be completed independently unless otherwise notified. Cheating will result in the grade of a zero.

Assignments:
All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date specified. If turned in after due date, the assignment will not receive full credit. All work is to be done neatly.

Tests:At least 4 major test grades per six wks. May include projects, grammar, speaking, and writing. A week is given to make up tests.

**Students are responsible for making up Test below 70 by attending tutorials and retesting within a week of failure.

Class Participation: Speaking is an integral part of learning a foreign language. Although we are in the beginning levels of instruction, students will be expected to use Spanish in class as much as possible. You will not be penalized for incorrect answers, so don’t be shy! A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and being prepared are also important parts of your class participation grade. Student success is a direct correlation between good attendance and good grades. Students are expected to be present and participate each day.

Make-up Work: A student is expected to make up all work missed regardless of the reason for the absence. The student is responsible to find out from the teacher what work was missed.
