Consuming and Socializing
By organizing and examining my eating habits, I found my personal preference overrules shopping and preparing. By saying this, I am acknowledging I typically do not eat for pure nutritional or economic gains. I am a full-time college student, active with classes and social functions, andI do not allot specific times for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I generally look for quick and easy foodstuffs that will get me though the day.
Presently, I live in a small an apartment that has limited space. Therefore most of my free space is devoted to organization of clothing, personal items, and school books, not much room for food. Like the majority of college students, I live on a undersized fix budget which only allows me to shop once a month at Target. When I shop, I spend anywhere from fifty to seventy dollars on snack-like, microwavable goods, and the occasional stove-friendly item. These items are speedy and simple for me to prepare. This allows me the convenience to take them with me as a go about my busy schedule. Fortunately, my classes are near the FergusonCenter which allows me to grab a quick bite, study, work on my computer, and most importantly socialize. At the Ferg, I meet with friends for lunch, coffee, and other snacks. Eating might be the main reason for my attendance but I have unearthed it is not my main purpose. This purpose is to socialize, something I was unaware of until this assignment forced me to dissect my eating habits.
I was raised to believe that breakfast, lunch and dinner are important in keeping a family together. As a junior in college, I still believe this but my dedication to mealtime has dramatically decreased since I have moved away from home. I realize that many of my college friendships are based around eating or drinking, as can be seen in this assignment’s associated table. My reasoning is that everyone needs to eat and social interaction assists in continuing survival. Living at home, my family would sit down in a traditional fashion and have dinner. Since I am no longer able to do this, I find that I now fill the void with my friends in the form of going out for dinner or for drinks. By attending lunch with friends, I appease my need for personal and social interactions.
Socially, I can’t survive with out my best friend Kate. She and I always pick restaurants, wine, and ingredients for a meal together. I never realized how much the places we go to reflect the social needs I am trying to gain in that moment. For example, when I go the Ferg to eat, I casually socialize and do not worry with how I look or who is there; I am there to see friends and gossip. Dining at Chuck’s Fish House fulfills the unique formal type of social need. My attire reflects the formality and I care about who I surround myself with. The bar, In Italy, has a similar but still unique social fulfillment to Chuck’s but less formal.
In conclusion, this assignment has shown me how necessary food is in my life. I found that eating is not just satisfying my hunger needs or for boosting economic success. The act of eating fulfills my social needs. Being in college has limited my food-ways and food habits but it has introduced me to new experiences and gives me chances to form new relationships. I may not have the time to shop or prepare regular meals but I prefer my random consuming and socializing because they are just enough to get me though the day.
