ATTENDANCE

Your attendance is reported to the International Students’ Centre on a term by term basis. Under the conditions of your Visa, you are required to attend not less than 80% of all scheduled classes. A warning letter will be issued if your attendance falls below 85% in any one term (see Appendix A) and you will be required to attend counselling with the International Student Co-ordinator.

If your attendance does not meet the 80% requirement for two consecutive terms, an Intention to Report letter (see Appendix B) will be forwarded to you and the matter will be referred to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. At this time you will also be advised of your right to appeal this matter in accordance with DEC International guidelines.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation arrangements during your stay at Warners Bay High School must be approved by DoE International. Students who are under 18 years of age must obtain approval from DoE International if they wish to change these arrangements. Students who are over the age of 18 years must notify DoE International of any changes within seven days of them occurring.

It is strongly recommended that students discuss proposed changes to accommodation arrangements with their parents and guardians before action is taken.

Students must inform the school’s International Students’ Co-ordinator of their current accommodation twice per term. (See Appendix D). Please advise the school of any proposed changes to your welfare arrangements as soon as possible.

ASSEMBLIES

General assemblies are held on Monday morning after roll call at 9.06am – 9.20am. All students must attend.

ASSESSMENT

Calendars for assessment tasks have been established for all subjects in Years 10, 11 and 12. The Deputy Principal (Curriculum) is responsible for these calendars. Any proposed variations must be discussed with the relevant Head Teacher and the Deputy Principal (Curriculum).

If a student in Years 9 -12 fails to submit a task on the due date or is not meeting Board of Studies requirements, an “N” Award Warning Letter may be issued. If a student is absent on the date of a scheduled assessment task “Illness/Misadventure Appeal” documentation must be completed. You should consult with the International Student Co-ordinator before doing so.

All International Students are required to make a genuine attempt to engage with all class work and assessment tasks. This includes Preliminary Examinations. In most instances home schools require students to maintain an acceptable level of application and attainment in order to ensure that they are not required to repeat the academic year when they return.

BUS TRAVEL

International students are not eligible for subsidised transport under the School Student Transport Scheme. Travel on school buses is therefore undertaken at the expense of the individual student.

CANTEEN

Lunches can be ordered and purchased from the school canteen by filling out the front of a lunch bag and handing it to Canteen.

CLASSROOM USE

Students should wait for permission from a teacher before entering a room.

Students must leave their rooms tidy and free from litter with chairs and tables arranged in an orderly manner so that the next class will not be delayed.

COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY

Every student and staff member has access to the school network and the Department of Education and Training’s internet portal. User IDs and passwords are issued to students when they arrive at the school.

The Library also provides access to a Smart Board, Interactive Classroom facilities, video conferencing and computing facilities.

CRITICAL INCIDENT POLICY

The DoE policy, procedures and Emergency Management Guidelines apply to all students

enrolled at Warners Bay High School including International Students. Additional actions that will be taken when an incident impacts an International Student include:

§  contacting family in the student’s home country and guardian/carers in Australia if the student is under 18 years

§  contacting family in the student’s home country and the guardian in Australia if they have one, if the student is 18 years or older.

§  notifying the relevant consulate or embassy if the situation is life threatening

§  notifying DoE International of the emergency and actions taken by the school.

§  recording on the student’s file all actions, interviews and conversations.

EXCURSIONS

Any variation to the normal routine which takes students out of their class or their normal lessons can only proceed with the approval of the a student’s parent or guardian. Excursion notes must be returned to the Front Office with a completed Medical Information Form attached. Costs associated with participating in excursions are generally covered by the fees paid by the International Student. See the International Student Co-ordinator for further information.

FIRE AND EVACUATION

It is essential for the safety of students and staff that, in the event of a fire or related incident, certain evacuation procedures are followed. These procedures are clearly outlined and prominently displayed in each Block within the school.

These procedures will be rehearsed each year, and as often as necessary to ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of all buildings. Please familiarise yourself with your role and responsibilities in an evacuation.

Continuous ringing of bells and/or siren with or without a PA announcement indicates an evacuation of the school as practised each year.

FIRST AID, ILL STUDENTS AND MEDICATION

Students who are ill or require First Aid sent with a permission note to the Front Office. Another student may accompany them if needed. The clinic is in A Block and there are two qualified First Aid attendants.

Students who are ill must not leave the school without seeking assistance. All visits to the clinic are recorded. No student may enter the clinic without permission and NO visitors are allowed. If a student is ill enough to necessitate going home, the school will contact the parent, guardian or nominated person to come to the school and personally collect the student from the clinic or Front Office. If deemed necessary, a student will be sent to hospital by ambulance.

LATENESS TO SCHOOL (STUDENT)

If late for school, students must report to the Front Office in A Block to obtain a “Late Arrival” slip which must be presented to their teacher. Students must present to the office staff a note from a parent/guardian explaining their lateness.

LEAVE AND HOLIDAYS

Students requesting special leave for illness or to return home during their enrolment at Warners Bay High School must meet the criteria for compelling or compassionate circumstances. DoE International must be advised immediately of students who are granted special leave in these circumstances and will report to DIAC to suspend the enrolment under the applicable criteria. Evidence of circumstances must be provided. Periods of absence in these circumstances are not counted in the student’s attendance rate for the term/s affected.
