Course Description:

U.S. History promotes an understanding via a survey of America as a system of interrelated political units, regions, culture, eras in history and conflicts. Emphasis is placed upon helping the student develop an understanding of Post-Civil War American history and as a member of the community, the importance of individual responsibility.

Course Goals:

·  Identify the major eras in U.S. History from 1877 to the present and describes their defining characteristics.

·  Apply absolute and relative chronology through the sequencing of significant individuals, events, and time periods.

·  Explain the significance of the following dates: 1898, 1914-1918, 1929, 1941-1945, and 1957.

·  Pose and answer questions about geographic distributions.

·  Explain how participation in the democratic process reflects our national identity

·  Describe qualities of effective leadership.

·  Identify examples of American art, music, and literature that transcend American culture and convey universal themes.

eTextbook: McGraw-Hill, United States History Since 1877 (classroom set will be provided)

Required Materials:

Each student will be responsible for bringing the following supplies to class:

·  3-ring binder with pockets (with dividers)

·  Loose Leaf/Notebook Paper

·  Pen/Pencil (NO YELLOW INK)

·  Map/Colored Pencils

·  Highlighter (any color)

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

The 3 R’s for Success in American History

·  Be Respectful of your teachers, other classmates, and your surroundings. Raise your hand, listen, follow directions, and actively participate.

·  Be Responsible with your time so you can be organized. Take pride in your work. When you are absent, find out what you missed and complete assignments in a timely manner.

·  Be Ready with your homework and materials when the bell rings! Go to the restroom and your locker BEFORE you arrive to class because we will be busy every day.

·  Be in the classroom ready to work (with all supplies) when the tardy bell begins to ring (Begin working on daily warm-ups)

·  Music will be used as an INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL (I CHOOSE THE MUSIC)

·  Please adhere to the code words (i.e. I need your help)

·  Be involved in the appropriate classroom activity

·  Cell Phones are a NO and electronics are only permitted when instructed by the teacher

·  NO FOOD

·  FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL RULES & POLICIES AS OUTLINED IN THE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Grading Policy

Grades are based on the following scale. Each assignment is designated as a daily grade (i.e. homework/vocabulary) or major grade (i.e. test or long term project) based on length and degree of difficulty:

90%-100% = A

80%-89% = B

75%-79% = C

70%-74% = D

Homework:

Students’ homework will typically be what they do not finish in class. This will vary by student.

Makeup Work Policy:

On the day you return, you will be expected to turn in any assignments that were collected while you were out (that were assigned when you were present). Next, check with me to see what you missed and to pick up handouts, arrange to makeup tests, quizzes, etc. Turn in any missed assignments the next class session. This is your responsibility.

•  There is a hanging folder located in classroom with handouts from the week

•  Ask your classmates to see agenda from previous day before seeing me. We will address make-up work AFTER CLASS

•  EMAIL me if you are going to be absent, and I will send you electronic copies of handouts or notes to keep you on track. Please also check my web page

Late Work:

Regarding late work, you must turn things in on time. It is a disservice to your learning and my teaching when you turn work in late. However, I know that life happens. (Please speak with me, so other arrangements can be made.) This does not apply to tests or major projects. Please do not make it a habit. Beyond that an assignment will be accepted for reduced credit according to the Pearland ISD Student Handbook and Social Studies Department Guidelines.

Electronics:

Cell phones, iPods etc. are not allowed in the classroom and only permitted when instructed by the teacher. If you have one make sure it is placed in the “Cell Phone Home” during class. Cell Phones should NOT BE VISIBLE or will be taken up. You will have two choices: keep in a locked drawer in my classroom until the following day OR pick up and pay from the front office.
