Passage B(20 marks)

Read the following passage carefully.

Jane’s alarm clock went off but the flat was very quiet. She looked into her parents’ room – still asleep! She went to the fridge to get some orange juice, turning on the TV to check the time on the way. In the corner of the screen was a typhoon signal – Number 8. No school! What would she do with this free day?

She went back to bed but she didn’t feel sleepy. So she got dressed and went out to buy a newspaper.

The streets were nearly empty. It had been raining but it had stopped. The wind moaned around the tops of the buildings. As she turned the corner of the street, there was a great gust of wind. Plastic bags and an old broom flew towards her. Jane covered her face with her arm. Then a piece of metal from a broken-down fence came along on the wind. It hit her legs and she fell, cutting herself on it.

She struggled to her feet and made her way home. It was a deep cut. She would have to spend the day in hospital. That was worse than school!
