Overview:
As we play the “Wagons West!” game in class, you will be creating a rough draft map of the journey your wagon group took. The map will be filled in daily as we study different areas along the Oregon Trail or trail to Sacramento. Students will learn about the struggles Americans faced as they traveled west in the 1800s. The final map will be completed at home using your rough draft as a guide.
Requirements:
- Students will be required to update their rough draft map throughout the class study.
- By the due date, students will turn ina hand drawn or traced map showing the route your wagon took to Oregon or California. Use COLOR and 3 events that occurred to your wagon on the trail. The events should be written where it took place on the map.
- You need to include one sentence that describes the geography of the location.
- Included on the map will be 3 two sentence “mementos” of things that happened to you and your “wagon family” along the way. (You will get this information from your fate cards, so make sure you’re keeping a log of what happens to you!) Consider using vernacular from that people going west would use in the 1800s.
Definition of memento: n. pl. me·men·tos or me·men·toes.
A reminder of the past; a keepsake
- Include your wagon family name on the map
- Possible creative details: Extra Drawings on the map (animals, other landmarks, etc), flowers dried on the map, extra historical facts about the mid-1800s.
Reminders:
- Your Pioneer map must be hand-drawn. YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH AN OUTLINE MAP.
- Be Creative and use your imagination when creating your map!
- You will need to include factual information from class notes at your stops/ fate cards
- You will lose points if you do not include “mementos” from the fate cards.
- Make your map look old and worn. Remember it is from the 1800s!
- Include at least three events that happened along the way.
