Title / Undertake petrochemical wellhead maintenance activities under supervision

Purpose / This unit standard applies to operational activities carried out on producing wellheads.
People credited with this unit standard are, under supervision, able to: establish the symptoms and causes of wellhead faults; prepare for the removal and dismantling of wellhead items and components; contribute to the removal of items and components at a petrochemical wellhead; replace wellhead components and component parts; assemble wellhead components and component parts; and adjust and test wellhead component parts in restored equipment.

Explanatory notes

1Performance of the outcomes of this unit standard must comply with relevant site requirements, manufacturer's recommendations, instructions of the assigned company engineer, and the following legislation:

Health and Safety at Work Act 2015;

Resource Management Act 1991.

2This unit standard is intended for, but is not limited to, workplace assessment. While all evidence requirementsmust be met, it is noted that all range statements within this unit standard are indicative and dependent on enterprise and site specific equipment, procedures, and practices.

3This unit standard applies to wellhead equipment above the master shut off valve on the Christmas tree.

4Definition

Site requirements mean the site specific documented methods for performing work activities and include health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Establish the symptoms and causes of wellhead faults under supervision.

1.1Reported symptoms of faults are verified without delay in accordance with site requirements.

1.2Preliminary checks and tests are completed to establish the causes of faults.

1.4Information concerning the symptoms and cause of faults is effectively communicated to relevant personnel in accordance with site requirements.

Outcome 2

Prepare for the removal and dismantling of wellhead items and components under supervision.

Rangeremoval and/or dismantling of three items and/or components.

Evidence requirements

2.1Authorisation procedures and instructions of the assigned company engineer are located and referenced.

Rangeinstructions, drawings, specifications, authorisations, safety, permits, isolation certification.

2.2Health and safety requirements for the removal of items are identified and assessed in accordance with site requirements.

2.3Resources are selected prior to commencement of maintenance activity.

Rangetools, equipment, auxiliary services, materials, specialist services, personnel.

2.4Ancillary services to facilitate the removal of items and components are agreed upon with the assigned company engineer and consequent requirements are coordinated with relevant service people in accordance with site requirements.

Rangelifting equipment, access equipment, support services.

2.5Checks carried out to ensure that tools, materials, and equipment fit the specified purpose are described in accordance with site requirements.

2.6Isolations to complete the activity are carried out and checked to ensure compliance with site requirements.

Outcome 3

Contribute to the removal of items and components from a petrochemical wellhead under supervision.

Range at least three items and/or components.

Evidence requirements

3.1Disconnection of items and components minimises downtime and disruption to production schedules, and complies with instructions of the assigned company engineer.

3.2The removal of items minimises downtime and disruption to production schedules.

3.3Removed items and components are identified, cleaned, transferred, and stored in a safe, secure manner in accordance with site requirements.

3.4Site procedures for the housekeeping of the work area are followed.

3.5Communication is maintained with appropriate personnel during removal operations in accordance with site requirements.

3.6The release of substances to the environment during maintenance activity is minimised in accordance with site and legislative requirements.

Outcome 4

Replace wellhead components and component parts under supervision.

4.1Ancillary services are coordinated to facilitate the replacement in accordance with site requirements.

Rangelifting equipment, access equipment, transport.

4.2Tools and equipment are used safely in accordance with site requirements.

4.3Workplace procedures are followed to confirm that replacement parts meet the specification.

4.4Action to be taken in the event of specified replacements not being available is identified in accordance with site requirements.

4.5Components and component parts are cleaned and protected in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

4.6Components and component parts are fitted in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

4.7Site procedures for the housekeeping of the work area are identified.

4.8Communication is maintained with appropriate personnel during replacement and adjustment operations in accordance with site requirements.

Outcome 5

Assemble wellhead components and component parts under supervision.

Range at least three components and/or component parts.

Evidence requirements

5.1The work requirements of the assigned company engineer are complied with during assembly.

5.2Parts used for assembly are accurately identified, cleaned, and verified as being fit for purpose in accordance with site requirements and manufacturer’s recommendations.

5.3Tools selected for assembly are used safely in accordance with site requirements.

5.4Parts are assembled to manufacturer’s specification and site requirements whilst minimising downtime and disruption to production schedules and meeting maintenance planning requirements.

Outcome 6

Adjust and test wellhead component in restored equipment under supervision.

Evidence requirements

6.1Wellhead components are adjusted to meet specifications in accordance with site requirements.

6.2Methods of testing restored equipment are identified.

6.3Test equipment requirements are identified.

6.4Tests related to the equipment are completed throughout assembly and reinstatement in accordance with site requirements and manufacturer’s recommendations.
