Week Six
OverviewTopic: Windows 7 Programs I
This lesson introduces students to computer concepts, uses, and problem solving techniques. The topics covered in this unit include an introduction to Windows 7 bundled programs. Such concepts as how to use dialog boxes, opening and saving programs and basic word processing in WordPad are also covered.

Suggested Lecture Outline
Instructors are encouraged to model lectures using the following points:
Lecture: 3 Hours
Time on Task:
- 30 Minutes (10 per day) Introduction, weekly summary, and overview
- 90 minutes in 3 increments of lecture
- 60 minutes of activities

Some activities also require students to use the Internet. Incorporate enough time for activities where you might need to go to a computer lab or setup the demo computer for display. It’s recommended to allow for 5 minutes per activity.
Also, it will be important for students to access MS Windows 7 on a computer. It will be helpful if each student has their own copy, but at a minimum be prepared to deliver this lecture on a white screen with Windows 7 running most of the time.
Appendix C should be distributed to students at the beginning of class. Your lecture should cover no more than 5 minutes describing each procedure where necessary.
Appendix D is used in an assignment and is optional.

[Instructor Note] It may be helpful to start with Appendix C(demonstrations while identifying and summarizing the various features and processes for 6.1, 6.4). Also, “WordPad” is included in activities before it is formally introduced in the text and lecture outline. You may want to incorporate important “WordPad” concepts early in the lecture.

6.2Summarize the processes for navigating program windows.
- Window menu button
- Access commands for restoring, moving, sizing, minimizing, maximizing, and closing the program window.
- Quick Access toolbar
- Click the buttons in this toolbar to quickly save a file or launch the Undo or Redo command.
- Title bar
- The name of the program and the name of the file open in the program window appear in the title bar.
- Window controls
- Include a Minimize button, a Maximize or Restore button, and a Close button.
- File tab
- To view options for creating a new file, opening an existing file, saving a file, printing a file, and more.
- Ribbon
- Displays groups of related buttons and options in tabs.
- Work area
- Files you open in the program appear in the program window’s work area.
- Scroll bars
- To view parts of the file not currently on screen, click the scroll box in the scroll bar and drag in the desired direction.
- Zoom controls:
- To zoom in or out of the file displayed in the work area, use the Zoom In button, the Zoom Out button, or the Zoom slider.

- Option button
- Clicking an option button enables or disables the feature associated with it.
- Checkbox
- A checkbox is similar to an option button in that clicking a checkbox enables or disables the feature associated with it.
- Text box
- Enter text in a text box.
- Drop-down list box
- A drop-down list box has a down arrow on the far right side.
- Spin button
- You use a spin button to set a numeric value.
- Command button
- Click to execute its associated command.

Step 1: Create a folder titled “Documents” on your desktop.
Step 2: Open WordPad.
Step 3: Using any Internet search engine, locate a picture of your choice.
Step 4: Save the image to your hard drive.
Step 5: Import the image or “object” to your WordPad document.
Step 6: Just under or over your image, compose a 25-50 word paragraph that either describes your image or states why you chose it.
Step 7: Save your WordPad document to your “Documents” folder on your desktop.
Step 8: Close the document and WordPad.
Step 9: Email your document to the instructor.

Step 2: Compose an essay in WordPad of 200-330 words that compares and contrasts how the information is presented (did it make sense, was it easy to read), overall informational value, and focus of each article.
Step 3: Submit your essay to the instructor.
