Emma for Social Secretary ;-)

Hi, I'm Emma Silvester, an English undergraduate, entertainment officer for the May Ball and I'm running for Social Secretary!

I want to be Social Secretary because:

  • Social events are crucial formaintaining a healthy work/social balance and bringing college members together who would, otherwise, be unlikely to cross paths.
  • The events (especially during fresher’s week) were the reason why I felt so welcomed and less anxious about moving to a new city and starting this degree; I would like to be involved at this level to ensure that next year’s students feel just as accepted as I was.
  • Hughes Hall is a diverse, international atmosphere and I want every single student to feel included and part of the family.
  • In terms of experience, I worked full time in administration for two years and as an office manager for four and I am one of the events coordinators for this year’s May Ball.

If elected I will:

  • Give all members of the college the opportunity to have a say in the events using online surveys and polls.
  • Hold events that are inclusive to all students regardless of background, nationality, faith and identity and accessible for students with disabilities.
  • Ensure variety of events by liaising with societies, student groupsand other officers.
  • Revitalise fresher’s week
  • Continue to arrange regular bop, formal and university swaps
  • Fight for as much free booze as humanly possible!
  • Introduce free mocktails at events where free alcohol is given for those students who do not wish to drink (these would be available to purchase at other times)

Liaise with the sub-committee to arrange:

  • Bouncy castle’s and more activities for garden parties
  • Refreshing the board games (giant jenga and frustration)
  • Movie nights
  • Events at the bar: beer pong, karaoke, student performers, talent shows
  • More super formals: international cuisine nights, themed nights and fancy dress
  • More free food: pizza night, sushi night, veggie night, chocolate night
  • Events outside of college: planned nights out, picnics, punting
  • Mini balls
  • Weekend city trips
