Frequently asked Questions
1. How much elemental calcium is in OsteoBlast?
Each Blooms Osteoblast tablet contains 500mg of elemental calcium, as carbonate, which is 50% of the adult RDI.
2. What do the other ingredients do?
The nine other synergistic vitamins & minerals offer additional support to help absorption and effectiveness of the product. Refer to detailer or the box for specific information on these.
3. Is a higher dose of calcium better?
No, research has shown that the body can only absorb a maximum of 500mg of calcium at one time.
4. What is the difference between Calcium carbonate and citrate?
Calcium citrate is a more acidic, synthetic form of calcium which is not recommended for people with acid stomach conditions. Calcium citrates are also not recommended for people with renal failure. Calcium citrate provides less elemental calcium by weight than calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate, naturally sourced from limestone, is well-tolerated and recommended for people who suffer from acid stomach – which is why it is commonly used in antacids. Both forms are equally well absorbed when taken with food.1
5. Is OsteoBlast better than calcium hydroxyapatite?
Calcium hydroxyapatite is ground bovine bones, and is therefore not suitable for vegetarians or certain religious groups.
6. How much Vitamin D is in OsteoBlast?
Blooms Osteoblast provides 500Iu of Vitamin D in the form of Vitamin D3 (the most absorbable form) which equates to 12.5mcg, 50% of the RDI.
7. When is it best to take a calcium supplement?
For best absorption, take morning and evening with a glass of water or juice. An important factor affecting absorption is how well a product dissolves. Each batch of Blooms OsteoBlast is designed to disintegrate within 20 minutes.
8. Can calcium supplements cause any problems?
Any calcium product can interfere with iron absorption and the absorption of certain antibiotics. It is recommended you take the calcium supplements 2 hours before or after the iron product or antibiotics.
9. Has the product been clinically trialled?
Yes, in 2008 a clinical trial2 conducted by Professor Terry Diamond, head of the Metabolic Bone Unit at St George Hospital, Sydney, found that Blooms OsteoBlast was effective in treating vitamin D deficiency, therefore allowing calcium to be effectively absorbed by the body.
10. Is it suitable for children?
Yes, it is suitable for children over 12 years of age. An adequate calcium intake during childhood and adolescence is essential in order to achieve peak bone mass during their twenties.
11. Is it suitable for pregnant women?
As with all calcium products and indeed all other supplements, individual health requirements can vary during pregnancy, and so all pregnant women should consult their health professional before embarking on any supplementation.
12. How many should I take?
