Task 2: Salmon Population Status and Trend Data Pilot
Description: Develop a pilot project for salmon population abundance and productivity data. Identify and understand existing protocols
Executive Lead: Barry Thom, NOAA Fisheries, 503.231.6266,
Summary of Progress
STEP 1: Define the need/requirement for information on ESA-listed anadromous fish abundance and productivity in the Region.
a. Develop a draft data dictionary for abundance and productivity information.
ü Developed data dictionary structure to capture the scope of regional abundance and productivity indicators, and the methods and procedures used to derive them.
ü Compiled existing information on regional abundance and productivity indicators, methods, and procedures with which to populate the data dictionary (sources include CBFWA, Ecotrust – State of the Salmon, and NWFSC)
ü Develop database and analysis tool for evaluation of derived abundance and productivity indicators relative to viability targets (NWFSC)
¨ Currently finalizing draft data dictionary for regional review (to be distributed by June 23)
b. Identify needs of each entity that uses information.
¨ To be accomplished by regional review of draft data dictionary. Reviewers requested to identify abundance and productivity indicators or methodologies that are not reflected in the draft.
¨ Incorporate review comments and finalize abundance and productivity data dictionary
STEP 2: Complete a pilot inventory of existing salmon population abundance and productivity data for 2 ESUs
¨ Develop data entry tool for the pilot inventory based on the data dictionary indicators/methods/procedures, and including fields for data source and quality
¨ Determine the two ESUs to be examined in the pilot inventory (consensus of Executives)
¨ Conduct pilot inventory, using existing products (e.g., from CSMEP, NWFSC) as much as possible, with input from agencies’ staff as needed
¨ Display/analyze gaps (e.g., using tabular displays, GIS, and other tools)
STEP 3: Based on above, outline a common approach that supports, at a minimum, a set of core regional needs for population abundance and productivity data and distribute it for review by the Executive Summit.
· Fall 2008 Executive Summit
¨ Decision to expand pilot to encompass entire region?
STEP 4: Conduct region-wide inventory
STEP 5: Develop recommendations on region-wide abundance and productivity approach
STEP 6: Implement region-wide approach
TASK 2 - IMMEDIATE NEEDS:
· Commitment by Executives to devote staff resources for review of draft data dictionary (STEP 1, above)
· Commitment by Executives to devote staff resources to support completing pilot inventory for 2 ESUs (STEP 2, above)
· Commitment by Executives to devote staff resources to contribute to the development of a draft abundance and productivity approach based on the pilot inventory (STEP 3, above)
TASK 2 - LONG-TERM NEEDS:
· If initiated, commitment by Executives to devote staff resources to support the region-wide abundance and productivity inventory (STEP 4, above)
· Commitment by Executives to devote staff resources to contribute to the development of a region-wide abundance and productivity approach (STEP 5, above)
