COURSE DESCRIPTION: Recognizing and understanding the vocabulary of healthcare professions. Emphasis on medical prefixes, suffixes, and word roots as used in oral and written communications.
TEXTBOOK:Required: Chabner-Davi-Ellen, The Language of Medicine, 10th Edition or latest edition. W.B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is important to passing this class. Excessive absences (6 or more) may affect your final grade. You are allowed three absences (either excused or unexcused) during the semester. Your grade will be lowered by one letter grade for each absence beyond the three allowed. You will not pass the class with 6 or more absences. Arriving late or leaving early, without discussing the matter that day with the instructor, may result in an absence. I will have no choice after that day but to assume you were absent.
WITHDRAWAL FROM THE COURSE: Dates and deadlines to withdraw from class are posted on Texas State website and listed in class schedule catalog.
EVALUATION CRITERIA: Evaluation will be based on written examinations consisting primarily of multiple choices, matching and short answer.
**80%- Unit Exams - Lowest unit exam will be dropped
10%- Final Exam--COMPREHENSIVE
10%- Misc. Assignments quizzes, etc.
**You must take ALL exams in order for the lowest to be dropped. If you miss an exam that “0” will be counted into your average then the next lowest can be dropped.
Make up exams: A student may not make-up an exam unless there is an extenuating circumstance. Student must notify the instructor of extenuating circumstances prior to the test being given. Instructor will make the final determination on whether the make up exam will be given. Make-ups will only be given during office hours and arrangements must be made before the next class period. Each student is allowed only one make-up per semester. Missed exam must be made-up before the next exam. (This excludes final exam which will be given at one time only. No make up for the final.)
*Final exam exemptions--NO exceptions on the average or attendance!!!
90.0 and above with no more than 3 absences--exempt
A = 100 - 90D = 69 - 60
B = 89 - 80F = 59 & below
C = 79 – 70
ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: The Health Information Management Program follows the Academic Honesty Policy stated in the handbook. In addition, the following HIM Policy will be followed:
Students guilty of knowingly using, or attempting to use, another person's work as though that work were their own, and students guilty of knowingly permitting, or attempting to permit, another student to use their work, may be subject to:
1) A requirement to perform additional academic work not required of other students in the course
2) A requirement to withdraw from the course with a grade of "F"
3) A reduction to any level of the grade in the course or on the examination or other academic
work affected by the academic dishonesty
Such conduct may also constitute grounds for dismissal from the Program and the University.
SPECIAL ACCOMODATIONS: Students having special needs/disabilities which require accommodations for successful completion of this course must notify the Office of Disability Services (or course instructor who will notify Office of Disability Services) no later than the end of the first week of classes. Failure to do so in a timely manner may result in accommodations not being made as necessary.
COURSE OBJECTIVE: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. Analyze the elements (prefixes, roots, and suffixes) of a medical term and determine the meaning of the term.
2. Construct and identify medical terms from prefix, root and suffix elements.
3. Proficiently use the text and other references to locate, define and correctly pronounce the medical term.
4. Recognize and write standard abbreviations for common terms.
5. Name and describe various types of diseases and operations.
6. Formulate an individual system for retention and building of a medical vocabulary.
